I'm worried coz my gfr went down to 20 and my creatinine is 180 now for only a month, they said that during my blood test I'm dehydrated coz my former gfr is 33 and my creatinine is 145. Can you please , advise me what to do especially on my diet?

Hi Amy. Late August my hubby was referred to a nephrologist as his creatine level was over 200 and his eGFR 27.....The nephrologist prescribed sodium bi-carb 2 capsules 3 times a day to keep his body alkaline, advised him to drink more water as his kidneys needed to keep flushed. Regarding diet, his advice was all things in moderation, not necessary to completely cut out any particular food but when having a steak dinner make sure he has a glass of water with it. His potassium level was a bit high so merely had a smaller banana with his morning porridge and that level is now normal. Hubby also suffered gout but since taking 300mg allopurinol daily has been gout free. The nephrologist went through his medical records and found that infection, inflammation brought about a big hit to the kidneys but they responded upwards when these things cleared. He was advised against anti-inflammatory drugs and ibuprofen, but paracetamol or zapain ( a mix of codeine and paracetamol) was fine. Everyone is different and before cutting out various food a clear blood analysis is needed. His last blood test showed creatine had dropped to around 150 and eGFR risen to 36 so not bad at all in such a short time. Please don't do anything without medical advice or better still advice from a nephrologist following full blood and urine analysis....... Best wishes, hope you have good advice very soon. Love Belle x

Hello Belle, Sorry for my delayed response. I'm happy to hear from you that your husband now is doing fine. You've got a good advice from your neprologist. Hope mine will soon be alright coz I really scared of any dialysis. So, I really have to be cateful of what I'm eating now coz I know diet is really a great help to our kidney. Thanks again Belle, regards and have a blessed day.

much love,

Hi Amy, I don't know how my husband feels about dialysis probably never thought about it but I too am scared..... I am a bit of a nag about his water consumption as it has been stressed to us that de-hydration is the enemy of poor kidney function, so hopefully if you keep your kidneys well hydrated your function will improve. He is having repeat blood and urine tests to-morrow and seeing the nephrologist on Friday will know then if my nagging has paid off ha ha. Will let you know. Try and stay active, keep well. Love Belle x

Hi Amy, a veggie diet tends to keep the blood pressure down. If you are dehydrated it will give a worse creatinine result. Brown rice and salad is good for the heart and that can make some improvemnent to the kidneys. So perhaps can a little of exercise if you feel like it. No salt and no alcohol. Have to think about the long term.
