Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic, my husband has been diagnosed an hour ago with type 2 diabetes , and told to start metmorfin 2x500mg daily , starting tomorrow: he needs to lose quite a bit of weight and smokes so told to stop, basically need to know what things he can eat for example, breakfast main meal etc. Can he have de caf coffee, which milk is best, is almond milk better than semi skimmed, he’s a night worker doing very long shifts, any advice would be so welcome, he will be seeing diabetic nurse in mid jan, his blood pressure higher end of normal

Hello, go on to Diabetes UK and you will find factual and helpful information. Others here will also give you some advice. Basically it's eating a healthy Low carb diet and exercise. Your husband will probably be seeing a Diabetic Nurse soon who will also guide him in the right direction. I have pre diabetes but have been told to watch my carbs intake. I try to exercise by attending an exercise class and walking. There are lots of good low carb diet books available. I found their recipes very helpful. Keeping a food diary is also useful to keep you informed until you get the hang of reading food labels. Best of luck.

Hi and welcome to the group, Eternity6 . Here are the free leaflets that are on the DRWF website. You can take a look at them and then show them to your husband’s doctor/nurse at the next appointment. Go to: drwf.org.uk/understanding-d...

I hope this helps!😀👍

I was put on gliclazide I think due to the fact that I was on steroids that raise blood sugars. I went on a low carb high fat diet and 6 months later I was taken off the gliclazide because my sugars were 39. I have been off since then (nearly 2 years ago] and am in remission.

All the best

Unfortunately he has been prescribed it so will be trying it, also will be watching his diet too, will see how he gets on, sadly so many meds affect other organs, the tabs I’ve been taking for 13 years everyday affect other thing in my body , but thankyou for posting the link Jeoffry and letting us know. Will know a lot more as the weeks / months go by
