Podiatry

After being diagnosed as type 2 i was advised to attend podiatry, owever in august at my review i was told Virgin care decided i did not qualify and if i wished i could pay for private consultation, in fact they could recommend patitioners. I declined and found my own. My friend told me she has heard that this is because diabetes is a self made condition and the reason we are now being told to pay is because we have inficted it on ourselves b over indulgence.

Is this true? And should we not be concerned about our feet any more.

Not had this experience on the NHS. Just had my annual checks, including feet checks. But then again the practice attend is not run by Virgin. I think you should find a GP not attached to Virgin. And then boycot all Virgin products and services.

Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune condition and the person does nothing to cause their diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes can be lifestyle related, but there are also other factors that can be the cause, pregnancy, hereditary, genetic etc.

It's unfair to make a person with diabetes feel guilty and that they are responsible for their own diagnosis if the facts are not established.

All people with diabetes should be supported with the proper educational support and resources to manage whatever type of diabetes they have and whatever the cause. With the correct treatment and management, even those that have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes because of their lifestyle and diet can make significant changes and in a lot of cases put their diabetes into remission.

A bi-annual or annual HbA1c and foot and eye screening are integral to good diabetes management and preventing long-term complications.

Your friend is wrong to make you feel bad.

Take control of your care and demand to have the screening you deserve.

I wish you well.

DRWF do some great information leaflets. You can download them as PDF's or listen to them in audio format from their website

I see a podiatrist every 10 weeks to have my nails trimmed because my feet are considered dead and no feeling what so ever. Feet health is very important.
