Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition and generally speaking do not produce any insulin

Type 2 Diabetes can be inherited or can be attributed to lifestyle or obesity and in this instance your pancreas produces either poor quality or insufficient insulin.

It is more complicated than this

I should point out that I am not medically qualified but a long term Type 2 diabetic on Insulin

This page goes through the different forms of diabetes and how they are detected/distinguished - Type1 and Type 2 are the most common but as you will see there are a lot of other forms.

Generally they split into two types - those in which insulin production is impaired (includes type 1), and those in which the body develops a resistance to insulin (includes type 2). Because of the different underlying causes effective treatment involves different treatments.

People with insulin resistant diabetes tend to be overweight and the assumption can be that if you are overweight your diabetes is insulin resistant and type 2 but this isn't always the case. A strong family history of diabetes can be an indicator of late on-set forms of diabetes due to problems producing enough insulin.
