I am away next week with my family which includes 2 young boys. We are going to the coast where I grew up and I am really worried that I won’t get through without drinking. I’ve been really up and down with drinking lately - ultimately I am all or nothing but I can do no drinking. My wife enjoys drinking. Can I get through the week? I really want to and enjoy what will be a special week showing my boys the places I used to go at their age. If I come back hungover and spoil the week I’ll be really annoyed with myself. Any tips?

You need a replacement drink - NA Beer, seltzer, NA Wine, Kombucha, etc. In your head - go back, back to when you were younger and didn't NEED booze - be that person!

This is powerful actually. I am going back to where I was a little boy with no booze. I loved where I grew up. I’ll keep that front of mind. Thanks for your reply.

It's good that you are planning things with your boys that should be a good focus. I agree on finding alternatives I am drinking no alcohol beer and fake G and T s. Just make sure your other half doesn't feel judged. Offering to take the boys off her hands while she has a break and being the designated driver might work. Keep busy, plan, take books ( especially quit lit) download great tunes, swim, walk play.

Take it one day at a time. Just try not to drink for one day. They add up. Or make some Zoom AA meetings at:

Unfortunately I have tried various temporary solutions until I was at a point where I realized I can’t continue like this any longer. At that point things started moving in the right direction. Joined a group therapy session and eventually was suggested by the counselor to see a friend of his who is a shrink. When I consulted him after listening to my family background suggested AA. That started my journey in AA. The book AA is a compilation of experiences of those who had the similar situation and what they did to recover. There was that honest portrayal of their condition and what they did to get over the malady. I think for me I consider that has a greatest grace god showered upon me. Rest is history and I am inching towards my 17th anniversary.
