You should monitor fasting and post prandial (2 hrs after food) blood glucose levels. Check HbA1c (last 90 days mean blood glucose levels).. get it done from a reliable diagnostic center/lab. Finally, consult your doc before decreasing daily dose of insulin. He/She may adjust dosage as deemed fit.
That is the 'method' to check glucose level; what about 'how to gradually avoid insulin usage'? was my friend's concern. Any takers? (no SUGGESTIONS please; only REMEDY sought)
