Febuxostat (Uloric) and allopurinol (Zyloprim) are equally effective in preventing recurrent gout. To prevent recurrent gout, patients should reduce their consumption of high-fructose corn syrup–sweetened soft drinks, fruit juices, and fructose-rich vegetables and fruits (e.g., applesauce, agave).
Colchicine is used to prevent gout attacks (sudden, severe pain in one or more joints caused by abnormally high levels of a substance called uric acid in the blood) in adults. Colchicine (Colcrys) is also used to relieve the pain of gout attacks when they occur. Colchicine (Colcrys) is also used to treat familial Mediterranean fever (FMF; an inborn condition that causes episodes of fever, pain, and swelling of the stomach area, lungs, and joints) in adults and children 4 years of age and older. Colchicine is not a pain reliever and cannot be used to treat pain that is not caused by gout or FMF. Colchicine is in a class of medications called anti-gout agents. It works by stopping the natural processes that cause swelling and other symptoms of gout and FMF.
Febuxostat is used to treat gout in adults who were not treated successfully with or who are not able to take allopurinol (Aloprim, Zyloprim). Gout is a type of arthritis in which uric acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, builds up in the joints and causes sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints. Febuxostat is in a class of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of uric acid that is made in the body. Febuxostat is used to prevent gout attacks but not to treat them once they occur.
Allopurinol is used to treat gout, high levels of uric acid in the body caused by certain cancer medications, and kidney stones. Allopurinol is in a class of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It works by reducing the production of uric acid in the body. High levels of uric acid may cause gout attacks or kidney stones. Allopurinol is used to prevent gout attacks, not to treat them once they occur.

My Dear Sandy
Sorry to hear from you for the first time that you have Gout...
One of the basic reason of Gout attack is due to eating food stuff which are high in Purine compounds which are nothing but Aromatic heterocyclic compounds containing Nitrogen...These are mainly found in meat, Sea food ..
In other words , you can not control Gout unless you stop eating meat....medicines will help very little if you continue to eat meat....is equivalent to pouring water in leaking mug and getting surprised why the mug is not getting filled up.
Another thing, A number of research papers have shown associations between Gout and type 2 diabetes including a study from Harvard Medical School, published in 2014, which showed gout to be associated with a 70 increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Also it can lead to Nephropathy...
Perhaps one can control one's diabetes if one is able to control his Gout.
A vegetarian Diet is the best strategy to avoid Gout attack as proved in two Cohort studies consisting of 15000 people.
