There are as such no short term complication or rather symptom for any complication of diabetes but if your blood sugar level remain higher than normal...i.e. if HbA1c >8 for say about a year or two or more, you may start getting symptoms of neuropathy. It can be Peripheral neuropathy, Retinopathy (affecting eye), Nephropathy (affecting kidney) or any other neuropathy concerning other organs and ultimately organs may fail.

Just eat one or two times (meals) a day and do fasting once or twice a week. The gap between two meals should be 8 hours and so keep 8 hours as your eating windows and rest 16 hours you would be fasting. I will post in a due course of time, different benefits of fasting by Dr. Jason Fung. When you eat, one or two meals just see you eat enough protein so that you feel full for rest of the day and do not feel hungry so as to create a need for snack. Use ghee and butter freely with your meals to avoid sugar spikes. That way thus by increasing enough protein content and fat content of the meal, you will eat less carbs and feel more satisfied for a longer time. Eat only one item in a meal...don't eat 5-6 items just in one meal to increase your total calorie content. Relish the taste of just one item...it is quite enjoyable. Trust me. For e..g. you are eating boiled moong in breakfast eat only that.... or if in lunch, eat only moong and a little rice. Don't eat a whole thali we Indians are used to like Roti, sabji, daal and chawal. We don't need all of that at a time.

I support the suggestions given by Aska9.I want to add one thing do not sleep after eating.sit in upright position or light walking leisurely.Dinner should be taken at least 2 hours before going to bed.your night meal should be light with low carb, medium protein and medium fat.you should sleep for at least 7 hours in the night.Thanks.

Short term complications,of type 2 DM are hypoglycemia. and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic nonketotic syndrome.

Hypoglycemia is a side effect of treatment of diabetes & not symptom of complication. i.e. if you eat less according to dose of medicine you have taken your sugar level may go down due to some medicines.

What is that syndrome you said above?

DKA can be a life threatening short term complication. In some patients, not on secretagogues there may be sudden " revival " of pancreas causing life threatening hypos albeit less frequently.

I think DKA happens only when blood sugar levels are high for long time. So I think it is not a short term complication

Firstly we have to define what's short and what's long term for D complications. As such D pathogenesis start early in the life, may be in the womb or childhood. So there is not any short term complication but by short term here i used in the sense that renal and cardiac like complications take years to develop whereas dka can take few hours or days. But the debate will go on.

>> Diabetic ketoacidosis signs and symptoms often develop quickly, sometimes within 24 hours…

Well, you know better doctor, but I read DKA is more common with Type 1 diabetes since they do not make insulin at all and hence blood sugar levels go quite high and glucose is not pushed into cells...so for energy fat is metabolised into ketones thus causing Diabetic Ketoacidosis.

However, it can happen in Type 2 diabetes also, when after a long time of high blood sugar levels due to deficiency in insulin secretion (either if pancreas have burn out due to long history of diabetes or some genetic factor), so again here, insulin secretion becomes scarce after Pancreas burn out totally...a condition which takes a very long time in type 2 diabetes to develop. Isn't it? So, according to my understanding, it is a long term complication. But it may be sudden in certain cases when organ fails, heart attack, stroke etc...due to complication of bodily functions.

In very neglected dm2 can have dka. It's a possibility. By using short term here i mean it can develop within short time, say in hours and days. As such as i said diabetes and for that matter any chronic health condition the pathology starts early in the life. But you have very good understanding of the subject.
