Banana not rises BS level

Being a diabetic I took 10 bananas in empty stomach in morning and tested the blood sugar level after one and half hours. The value was 160 which is more or less equal to that value when I took 5 idlis and one cup of coffee.

Are you on any blood pressure medication?

Depends on the size and ripeness of the bananas. We do get 3 inch bananas in our parts that even the dieticians recommend for diabetics. One or two of such bananas should do. But why ten?

Starvation and excess food of any kind is not recommended for diabetics. You may take two bananas before noon.

Sure 10 bananas at a time is in no way good for even non diabetic people .how come it will be benificial for diabetics .one banana that too non ripe can suffice for diabetic people. “ sharing my experience you are the best doctor of yourself “go on taking little little after every two hours .live to eat and not eat to live

Hi. Taking banana regularly helps reducing bp. I also heard it. But what does it means taking care of calories? Do taking more calories also raise bp? Kindly elaborate it.

What I understood from coffeeday's comments is that:

-Taking banana regularly can be beneficial to lower BP due to its potassium contents.

-Since banana is high carb food, we should eat less carbs or calories in other foods to avoid spiking BS too much for diabetics.

I do agree with his advice however there are many other foods that are high in potassium but less carbs eg avocado, spinach, white beans, cacao powder or nibs including nuts and seeds etc.

I personally agree that diabetics can eat bananas especially green or unripen ones but in small portion.

I might understand wrong which I am happy to be corrected.

By the way, hope things are going well with your BSL control.

There is a lot of conflicting information out there about how many fruits are good for diabetics.

Fruits are loaded with vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and phytonutrients, which are good for health. Therefore, fresh fruits are good and should be a part of everyone’s diet including people with type 2 diabetes. But that does not mean that diabetic people can eat all the fruit they want.

Fruits are high in a sugar known as fructose. Even though the sugar is coming from a natural and healthy source, you still have to use it in moderation, because like any other carbohydrate-rich foods, it does raise your blood sugar levels.

Also, remember to spread your fruit intake at various times during the day. Remember that moderation is the key.

You can add bananas to your food in the following ways-

- Eating a whole banana is a better option compared to having it in smoothies or juices.

- Always choose a ripe but not an overripe banana. Starch constitutes 80-90% of the carbohydrate content in unripe bananas, which as the banana ripens changes into free sugars. A yellow banana with a slight greenish hue is an ideal choice.

- Choose a medium sized fruit. The bigger the banana, the more carbohydrates it will contain that will affect your blood sugar level.

- A ripe banana can be made diabetes friendly by sprinkling some cinnamon powder on it. Cinnamon contains antioxidants. It also helps regulate the insulin response and reduces the blood sugar level.

- Eat some protein with the banana. It can help to prevent any blood sugar spikes.

Human body is a complex system and due to many parameters controlling the metabolism, you cannot come to any conclusion based on one or two experiments. You have to at least try a few times and see if it is reproducible. Many kinds of fruits, excluding a few, can be eaten by diabetics in a limited quantity. Banana has many health benefits and is recommended for diabetics. Ten bananas at one time is too much even for non-diabetics.

Two bananas can be taken per day with out any adverse results , one in the mid morning , the other in the evening by 4 . 00 pm as snacks . Banana is a whole some fruit and gives instant energy while giving the feeling of satiation. Regular banana intake arrests the threat of stroke .There are many foods which contain potassium , but all may not be having the same feel of satisfaction . It is individual choice .
