If a person is overweight or obese and if he/she is having prediabetes, there is no objection in taking metformin as prescribed a doctor. Girls / young women having polycystic ovary syndrome/disease (PCOS/PCOD) are treated with metformin.
If a normal person takes anti-hypoglycemic medication, it will cause low blood sugar. If the blood sugar falls below 40 mg/dL, it may become fatal causing seizure, coma and death. If a prediabetic person controls his high blood sugar by diet and exercise, the dosage of metformin can be reduced.
About 60% of patients on monotherapy, may have worsening of metabolic control during the first 5 years of therapy and concurrent use of 2 or more medications with different mechanisms of action may be necessary.

No sooner than the medicine is discontinued, the BS and hence A1c will increase.
My statement is conditional - if the one return to a diet non-diabetics follow.
