STEEL CUT OATS

I normally avoid oats because I always felt that oats being cereal, better avoid them. But a packet of steel cut oats landed in my house from someone close. When I searched on google,it is seen that it has good nutritive value apart from a low GI of 42.I thought I should give it a try.Cooking was as per a video I found on Youtube.I ate about 45 gr(dry weight) with some milk and stevia.Few roasted almonds and some raisins completed my breakfast.I took a reading after 1 1/2 hours and it was 135.Then I did some cleaning work in the house, had a mosambi at about noon.At 1.30 pm,I felt like hypo and when I tested it was just 54.Took lunch immediately to stave off any further risk of hypo.

Why I narrated this was to just to highlight that we have a healthy breakfast option in STEEL CUT oats.Instant oats or rolled oats may not give the same result. Please give some thought to this.

Mr.Nair,What is your view about using steel cut oats?

The difference between rolled and steel cut oats is that while both contain whole grain oats, they are processed differently. Rolled oats are steamed, rolled, steamed again and toasted, ending up as thin flakes. Steel cut oats are made from oat kernels that have been chopped into thick pieces.

My son working in US for the last 20 years has advised me to use steel cut oats as it has more fiber and more nutrition. But I like rolled oats as it tastes better.

Sir,

What is your advice about taking normal oats particularly for Kidney patients with diabetes?

For kidney patients, the intake of sodium, potassium and phosphorous has to be restricted. To limit sodium in your meal plan: Do not add salt to your food when cooking or eating. Choose fresh or frozen vegetables instead of canned vegetables. Avoid processed meats like ham, bacon, sausage and lunch meats. Munch on fresh fruits and vegetables rather than crackers or other salty snacks.

In oats, potassium and phosphorous are high. Consult a dietitian.
