Glucose Meters

Do home test meters typically test higher or lower w.r.t. lab results ? I understand that there is a margin of acceptable error and the results could also vary depending on the validity of the test strips, its storage and cleanliness of fingertips. My question is - do they typically tend to overstate or the results could go eitherway w.r.t. lab results ?

  • My personal experience:

    (1) J&J One Touch simple select meter reads almost near to lab readings.

    (2) Accu Chek active reads higher than lab.

The above is the general trend that I could see. One is bound to see few exceptions to these.

I prefer meters that usually read higher than lab.

ISO standards specify +/- 15% error band, IIRC.

  • Thanks. Wonder how the TS Contour fares.

  • I guess the best way is to compare a few readings from different strips lot against lab readings. That would show the trend in general. Saying this as I haven't used TS Contour.

  • Makes sense.
