Is it advisable to have occasional drinks if you are diabetic?
If you have everything under control not a big deal so long as you stick to booze with no sugar and no carbs. Probably a bigger deal if you have a fatty liver.
An occasional drink probably does you no harm and that statement does come with a BIG Caveat.
1. Beer, Dark Rum per se are likely to give you sugar spikes. ( at least they do for me). Indian beers are best avoided, specially the newer varieties (Kingfisher Ultra, Biera etc are loaded with Sugar to give it a sweet/smooth taste and a single glass sky rocket your sugar levels) so best to Avoid.
2. What do you consume your drink with- Colas, Juices, Cocktails are generally sugar rich and will itself do u more harm then the alcohol itself.
3. Drinks are often accompanied by snacks/junk, which further compounds your Calorie intake. (So stick to salad etc if u can-Carrots/Cucumber/Chana/Peanuts are better options than Chips, fries, etc)
4. Monitor your sugars after your drink/s and the also the next morning. You do run the risk of hypoglycaemia (low sugars) post drinks so you need to be VERY VERY CAREFUL. Specially if you have had drinks and drop low in your sleep it can be very dangerous. I do set myself to an alarm to get a midnight check. Please Do eat your meal/dinner, pls don't substitute alcohol calories for food. Your body will not take well to this.
5. Trust your liver is in good order.
The intent of my note is not to freak you out, but to make you aware of things as I have experienced them and how you can manage.
Cheers to a good life 👍.
