Ashwagandha/Withania somnifera is Indian Ginseng.

But always go for Withania somnifera (Nagori).Withania somnifera is common name for herb which grows wild roadside.

Where as Nagori variety is domesticated variety and non toxic.

There are some long term side effects of Penax Ginseng.Where as for  Withania somnifera (Nagori) there are no known side effects even for long term usage.

Yes anupjee....No wherein Ayurveda it is suggested for diabetes.Yes it has got mind calming effect. Also helps in developing muscles.Helps in enhancing endurance.

Ashwagandha as wild bush grows by road sides in Pune. Also at many places in Maharashtra.

In local language it is called 'DHOR GUNJI' DHOR=Animal. Gunji =rosary pea/Abrus precatorius.

Local tribal use it for veterinary purpose. In larger doses it is toxic.

But the one which we get in Withania somnifera nagori.A domesticated variety.Grown primarily in and around Nagor district on borders of Rajasthan .It is safe.

ginseng  has very little influence in diabetes. however its slight aphrodisiac property can be embarassing for elderly diabetics and can exacerbate  existing prostate enlargement.

better to keep away from this product

Don't fall for any of this food/nutritional supplements ads, they are not regulated and there are no scientific evidence that they can help control diabetes.  There is no substitute to eating a healthy well balanced meal daily with regular exercise as the way to go to help keep diabetes in good control.  And if u don't have a clue to what comprises a healthy well balanced meal, u owe it to yourself to seek the help  or service of a licensed/registered dietitian to learn what foods you need to eat and the right amounts in order to live with diabetes without any complications for the rest of your life.  Nutrition education is the key to achieving this goal.

Dietitians and nutritionist have learnt from traditional teaching. They would recommend low fat diet. They themselves are scared of fats because of faulty training. So take care while you take their advice.

Rameshrao - using panax ginseng, American or Korean ginseng to treat diabetes is unwise.  Firstly it is expensive. Secondly, without proper guidance, you will get unwanted side effects due to ginseng energetics - eg. headaches, insomnia, hypertension and so on.

Ginseng is intended for the old and infirm for they lack energy.  Unless you belong to this age category, take heed and keep ginseng at arm's length.  There are hundreds of other botanicals you can use to lower BG.

But you'll have to stick to the fundamentals (i.e. the LCHF dietary plan) first before attempting to introduce single supplements like

[1] Gymnema sylvestre (Gumar/Sirikurinjan)                                                              [2] Banaba leaves (Jarul/Pride of India/Queen's flower)                                                [3] Pterocarpus marsupium (Vijasar/Bijaysar)                                                             [4] Fenugreek (Methi), Nigella sativa (Kalonji)                                                              [5] Catharanthus roseus (Periwinkle leaf/Sadabahar/nithyakalyani)                           [6] Costus igneous (insulin plant/Keukand/Neyccarikamaram, Venkai-c-ciray)         [7] Swetia chirayita (Nilavembu/Chirayata/Charaita/Chirata)                                     [8] Withania coagulans (Paneer Dodi/Paneer Ka Phool)                                             [9] Tulasi leaves, curry leaves/curry patta, tarragon, chammomile tea, Bilva/Vilva/bael leaves, clove, turmeric, cinnamon, oregano, garlic, aloe vera juice, ginger tea, sage tea, Amla juice.

Multi-herbal formulations are better:

[1] Zignidd [2] Hyponidd [3] Diabecon [4] Cogent db [5] Dia-Beta Plus [6] BGR-34      [7] Madhumehantak [8] Organic India Sugar Balance [9] Glucoprot [10] Diabond [11] Globinet [12] Greediab-C [13] Diab-O-Nil [14] Episulin [15] Diabohills Ultra  [16] Gymnedine [17] Diabetacure [18] Adicare Herbal Powder [19] Madhu Nashini [20] DB Tone [21] Glucocil [22] ProBeta [23] InsudinPro [24] Diaborex [25] Diafree [26] Diabkil [27] Diabiant [28] Diabovita [29] Diaved [3] Diabetex [30] Naavudi

You will need to test them out yourself preferably with the help of a physician.  Remember that what works for others may not necessarily work for you as each person has a different constitution.  Good luck!

Find out whether this works for you: ShooterGeorge's dietary plan/regimen using emmer wheat/long wheat/Kapli Gehun/Samba wheat/Samba Godhumai.  Check it out here at this link:
