Y,oga is taken from the sanscrit term Yuj, meaning union. There is Karma, Hatha,,etc. I am sure you can find more info.

Below are my understandings -

1) You can use Yoga to control stress, which in turn will lower you blood sugar levels if you are stressed.

2) I am not aware of any Yoga for diabetes as such. Some people may claim that doing some particular Yogasanas will cure Diabetes. I am skeptical about them.

3) Main "don'ts" for Yoga depends on the asanas you are doing. Certain asanas shouldn't be performed by patients suffering from certain diseases. (eg, people having back pain, etc..) Please check with a Yoga expert.

Please don't expect that Yoga will cure diabetes.

Yoga does not cure medical conditions, Relaxation classes may help, but again approach with caution.

Very briefly stated

a) Yoga is a combination of - exercise for your body, exercise for your mind

There is convergence of view that lifestyle and stress contribute to onset of diabetes

Gym or yoga or even long walk are beneficial in controlling diabetes. Physical exertions in yoga (abhyasas and asanas) basically increase blood supply to your vital organs like kidney liver and pancreas. Breathing exercises like pranayama increse and channelise oxygen supply to your body and mind.

b)What type of yoga?

Best thing for anyone is motivate and start and continue. With my little experience there is nothing like do only this for diabetes and do only this for Asthma etc.

b)Do's and donts

You do with the help of a knowledgeable teacher preferably. Do not think you can do by sitting in front of TV watch Baba and do on your own. It is lot more deep and intricate.

Strict diet and yoga is wonderful combination, Ocasional Gym and long walk, you can reduce your medicine intake and stress to NIL

Your stomach muscles strength plays a big part in Kapalbhathi. Quick contraction of stomach helps force air out. Like you have already said, you may have to do lots of ab crunches and strengthen your abs muscles, before you seriously try Kapalbhathi. With little experience over time you will be able to do it slowly and steadily (not faster and faster when you feel you run out of your breath)

' Yoga Chithavrithy nirodhah" As per Pathanjali Maharshy, Yoga is to stop mental activities and abide in your true nature. Yoga includes healthy life style, asanas ( posters) , pranayams( breathing technique),meditation etc. The Art of living provides 'Living Well Program' to prevent and control Diabetes, Hyper tension and other life style diseases. 'Sudearshan Kriya' a rhythmic breathing technique taught in this course is very beneficial. You may Google to find the researches carried out by AIMS, NIMHANS etc.on Sudarshan Kriya. Pranayama practice needs to be approached with care, avoid kapalbahti, uddiyana Bandha. Too much strain on the heart, follow your own breathing rhythm and do not hold your breath.. Avoid positions where the head is below the heart. Possible effect on the eyes, do not raise arms above the head, modify Vrkasana, . If there is nauseous feeling, avoid Savasan.

Much can be done to help. Heart and hypertension conditions, eye, ear conditions, follow same guidelines, head not below heart line. Avoid Camel, avoid Cobra, substitute Sphinx, do not tilt head back.

If attending a class, teacher should know all of this, please do not practice from book,or other mechanical means such as video.

Please take care of yourself.

Namaste.
