Apart from clinical triad of symptoms, excessive thirst, hunger and polyuria in diabetes which usually form the basis for diagnosing diabetes, there are varied skin infections which also point out that one may be suffering from diabetes. These skin conditions are seldom discussed as many of these skin diseases occur even without diabetes hence, hardly deserve any notice, but it may be a sign that should alert you towards diabetes.

Most common is ringworm infection of skin, which can occur in any part of body causing great discomfort because of itching .

Many diabetics must have noticed unusual skin conditions so let us find out from their experience.

Dear Ultraduo,

I have read your above post. I am diabetic / HBP / High Cholesterol / High Uric Acid. I am on medication and everything seems under control. If I forget to take my medicine, my Blood Sugar shoots up - say FBS: 140 up to 180.

Can I start LCHF diet given that I have high Cholesterol? - My triglycerides is 375.

@Michael_S

You can switch over to LCHF diet.

Lipid levels are affected by high consumption of processed food and processed food is mostly high carb with commercial oils. If you reduce your carbs and replace them with good fat and limited protein then you can have much more better BS control and improved lipids.

Diet will not help in improving lipids, if your lipid abnormality is genetic one.

Some people will try to discourage you from adopting LCHF diet just ignore them and go ahead with it.

Please do not go after hearsay, because

LIFE IS YOURS, HEALTH IS YOURS, SO DECISION SHOULD ALWAYS BE YOURS.

Michael,it is for you.

Take one teaspoon Virgin Coconut oil along with food. Do body massage with Virgin coconut oil twice in a week and take bath after half an hour. You will get relief from itching.

This is a very important topic, best understood when studied along with effects of advancing age and long term diabetes.I would like to share my experiences about this topic.Skin problems are common among diabetics even when the sugars are under control,as you advance in age.First and foremost,a diabetic may encounter peripheral diabetic neuropathy. This develops because the nerve cells on the surface of the skin do not receive adequate glucose energy. The skin becomes insensitive and in advanced conditions even a direct injury may not be felt. This is particularly so in the feet. The clinic will test your sensitivity on the feet with a meter or a feathery touch. If the results are not satisfactory, the doctor may prescribe some medication. You can also feel the deterioration in the feet because you feel a burning sensation which is rather painful.I apply a cream called DIAFOOT on feet after dinner and get quick relief, lasting for a day.Next day when you take bath, wash the feet thoroughly with soap, one foot at a time. This is important because the feet will be some what oily and you may easily slip on a wet bath room surface.

Next important skin condition develops with advancing age and long term diabetes. As you grow old,the number of sweat glands available gets reduced gradually and the skin does not get the necessary lubrication that one used to get in younger days.Dryness and itchiness develops and the problem gets aggravated because of long term diabetes, where in the surface skin cells get damaged due shortage of glucose energy.Itching and burning sensation

develops all over the body.I apply oil daily an hour or two before taking bath.Over a period of time, the skin condition improves and the itching and burning sensation almost disappeared.I have used Himalaya massage oil and also Neemgaurd oil with good results. You can also use olive oil or liquid paraffin.I also use moisturizing cream to get quick relief.

Sorry for the long post.

Please note that most skin conditions don't require any dermatologists opinion.

Your wt. indicates you are overweight. So go for wt. reduction first priority.

You are having itching since only 10 days,so nothing to worry. It may be due to hot weather..

I am 47, height: 5'3", weight: 62

I am confused with answers that I got. I was thinking of trying LCHF diet, just to see if I can control my numbers, so I can get rid of drugs that I am on. I am scheduled for a blood test on 24th July 2015, whereby I will know what is the current status of my Triglycerides. Meanwhile I was wondering if anybody has a table that shows the food that can be consumed based on LCHF diet. I would appreciate accurate, confirmed and faultless answers.

Thanks to all for your responses.

Vkrao, It will be improper for me to suggest any cream for your itch ,on symptom only. Still you can use any corticosteroid cream externally, if itch is unbearable.

Continuing the above, if you can tell the site or place of itching, any redness, any spots, raised or otherwise, or multiple spots in circle, any scaly lesion etc.you can also tell any other relevant thing. With detailed description something tangible may be suggested.

It is not that the itch is unbearable. but it is a little discomforting. The actual place of itch is on thighs, slightly over penis and stomach front portion.

I am very reluctant to suggest any medicine. Yet, you can give a try to a cream or skin ointment containing anti fungal agent like clotrimazole or miconazole. At this time please do not use corticosteroid preparations.
