Excess of everything is bad , it is also true for diabetic diet .

Lack of moderation has led to downfall of many . History is full of examples. Are we not ready to learn lessons? As far as our diet is concerned ? And go for diets which advocate extreme measures ?

I think we should proceed cautiously. I do believe that modern wheat is not very good for diabetics, but we must find a solution about how it may be processed to increase resistant starch. If by cooling after cooking rice, the resistant starch content can be increased, there is sure to be methods to increase resistant starch in wheat. What about fermenting with whey as we do for Nans and Bhatoora? We need nutritionists in the forum.

Emmer has helped me control my Blood Glucose levels

But if processing wheat or cooking differently can alter the nature of its starch, I would eat wheat.

we should balance diet with nuts, oils, milk products and vegetables. But make sure we take minimum amount of carbs that means which will not increase our bs levels. so vLCHF is the right diet.

Dr. R.Bernstein,as rightly said suffered from diabetes type 1 . And type 2 is discussed here, mostly. A gross difference between 1 and 2, is, as all know, in type 1 there is very very little or no production of insulin but here insulin's functioning is normal and in type 2 there is question of insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity. So it is clear that two conditions are fundamentally different.

Let us return to Dr.Bernstein, how much he disclosed and how much was conveniently omitted . He said only about carb.,he failed to disclose how much fat and how much protein he was taking along with how many dietary supplement he was taking daily. Why he had to resort to such a low carb.diet ? It is a ketogenic diet. The line between ketosis and ketoacidosis ( a life theatening condition ) is very thin ,he being a medical professional ,could understand and manage it. Is it possible for a common man to do this ? He never disclosed how much insulin he was taking before each meal ? I am still trying to find an answer. I am always open to correction.

If HCLF is not helping us why we should not go for LCHF. After all you alone have to manage your life !!!

when i stopped HCLF diet and switched over to LCHF miracle cure happened. it is so simple and common sense that our great learned scientist in this form will not agree with it. if we have intelligence, time and google then we can twist knowledge according to our desire. so people openly says yes HCLF WORK FOR DIABETICS. and poor people follow it... so sad....

Ignorance and mis conception is so wide spread here and every where that it is a cause of concern. Not only that minds are so biased that they do not want to listen and understand sane voices.

So let us continue to provide correct information regarding every aspect of diabetes so that every diabetic can take his own decisions based on proper ,correct and unbiased information.

It is not a forum to discuss what is scientific (one may refer Karl Popper if interested). But it is well known that each medicine has side effects (beside the costs) and only when the plus points are much more than the minus ones one should take medicines. I noted with interest as an Indian how much carried away you have been with your daughter's treatment in Canada and facilities that are free (though there is nothing like a free lunch .. but again economics is not a subject matter in this forum). Here we assemble as patients of DM mainly DM II and discuss various options available as treatment and LCHF is surely a great approach which is not talked about by so called scientific world dominated by Sharks and Vultures who get fatter on our illness and rotten mass. If you do not understand what is Low carbohydrate, I may explain that the terms are relative. Low here is something near to 100 gm per day and we all know it whereas High carb is anything much more than this. BTW the word 'balanced diet' is also relative. No one can argue about the need of a Balanced Diet but the billion$ question is balanced for whom - the medicine company or the patient? Many of us feel the nature of balanced diet for a DM II patient will be different from a normal guy and this belief is logical (not scientific ?). In any case the most important thing is to understand one's own body need and act accordingly. A DM II patient may take note of what many patients like him are thinking and doing and then decide for herself. The dependence on age old medical practice (sharpened by current commercial medical houses) and being carried away by availability of personal midwife, latest medical apparatus and may be helicopter ambulance etc are quite logical but as I said earlier Nothing is free so we have to decide on our own. However thanks for your vision etc. It has strengthened my outlook and understanding and also cautioned about the possible bounce back effect of the LCHF diet which truly has not been thoroughly tested ( people who can test are not interested). May god bless us.

LCHF may be best for diabetics with impaired glucose tolerance and pancreas as it makes less demand on the pancreas and normal starch processing. We can definitely keep our minds open on that.

But is it practical for an Indian housewife like myself, in a household where I am the only one with diabetes? Can I get chicken and turkey and beef and so on, cook them for myself and also prepare a rice and wheat diet for my family and my husband who does not like meat and cheese and fish. ( except fish curry). What about the cost?

My best option is to adapt our meals with its carbs, veggies, fish, unprocessed meats etc. to suit all of us. That is why I have opted for Emmer ( which is also adaptable to recipes of puttu, Upma, dosa, sambar Saadam, porridge etc) and though it is costlier, it is not as troublesome as a LCHF in a HCLF home.

I have also replaced rice with millet Sama ( little millet). These are all low glycemic foods.

I exercise.

I have no problem with doctors, only with the useless nutritionist who keeps repeating, 3 idly, 20 minutes walk and has no idea about alternatives.

I also believe that the resistant starch effects would improve my condition further if I find the will power of shooter george to avoid the fruits which are plentiful in my home.

unpractical diets cannot be followed by women, though they might take the trouble to prepare such meals for men. We have been shaped by years of conditioning that it is bad to put yourself before others in the family.

patliputra in reply toMRA13

Very well said. The same thing I was repeating again and again. But it did not go well . Impractical and people with fixed ideas don't understand or don't want to understand it. A practical and cost effective diet is need of hour. Thank you so much. MRA 13 . You are a great asset to this forum.

Well, it is good that your husband likes LCHF. Can you help me with a day's menu, breakfast, lunch and dinner?

I cannot have fish too often because it aggravates my presently mild psoriasis. I get stomach pain and gas from milk as well. I guess I was made to eat everything in moderation. I read that there are several races in India. May be That makes a difference. Anyway, I am satisfied with my progress. Thanks meenaraju and Patliputra , at a, norreal, Indiacratus and everyone. May all of us be cured. Nothing is impossible.

I use coconut oil for cooking, made by drying coconut and taking it to the mill which uses an expeller to extract the oil. It is good enough for me. My parents and grandparents used it without I'll effects. My Konkani friends pour it on their idli. I bought some Olive Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I think the Olive Oil is just a waste. I have to try the extra virgin on salads etc. but it is difficult to incorporate strange flavours into traditional dishes without compromising taste.

patliputra profile image
patliputra in reply toMRA13

Very valid points, raised by me several times. (1) Genetic make up decides effect of same food on different individuals. (2) addition of entirely different taste and flavour to our traditional diets . Many persons don't even want to consider these things when one diet is planned.

Thank you. I joined that but did not try the diet as I had recently shifted to emmer. Thought I would stick to it for 3 months, see the results and then try LCHF if necessary.

LCHF is managing diabetes well because you do not need to bother about insulin. The moment you shift, or in my case the day I stop exercising, we have the problems again.

The body is capable of curing itself. If New Castle theory is correct, when visceral fat disappears, the pancreas will start functioning.

Let us hope it does.

All the best.

MRA13 profile image
MRA13

Nevertheless, fatloss reactivated their normal glucose metabolism. If they regressed back to being diabetics, , they would have got all the fat back. This proves that the pancreas did not die out permanently. Where there is life, there is hope. You missed the point. It disproves the hitherto theories

MRA13 profile image
MRA13

Well, pancreas revived in those cases didn't it? It became dormant and then revived. Why not someone do a postmortem on a deceased diabetic?

I was on 24 units insulin 500 mg metformin and Diamicrom 60. I am now having better results with carbs in my diet and just 16 units of insulin and no other drugs.

I have just started emmer and exercise for skeletal muscles. It is skeletal muscles that absorb most glucose and the major group to become glucose intolerant. The exercise improves insulin sensitivity. I would love to have it verified whether it is because of the correction of a sluggish lymph besides improved metabolism.

The resistant starch in the emmer will improve my gut flora. It will also help me eat starch and still maintain low BS. It would not bring the dramatic results of a LCHF diet, which is managing on things which does not require a healthy pancreas. I am trying to nurse my muscles, lymphatic circulation, gut and liver and also pancreas back to health.there is also a mind body connection. As a manthinketh, so is he.

in reply toMRA13

A whiff of fresh air, finally.

Love your out of the box & experimental thinking.

If you can manage it, try Suryanamskar for lymphatic circulation & nursing back the muscles & see how it goes or go in for push-ups, squats, pull-ups & plank.

Pls keep us posted with your thinkings & experiments.

Thanks

Thank you. I will try to find a video. Planks not possible for me at present

Surya Namaskar, I heard, is a complete circuit. Old is gold.

in reply toMRA13

Surya Namaskar, as you rightly say is complete by itself.

As for Plank, I do not know the reason for not being for you at present. If it is the extreme effort required that is the problem, then not to worry.

All, push-ups, squats, pull-ups & plank, have stages which ( beginner to final ), one can go ( master ) through at one's own pace, till one reaches the final stage. If you want, I think I have a doc lying around somewhere, which tells us how to go thro it. PM me your email id. I'll mail it across to you.

That said, Surya Namaskar is the way to start off.

Rest can be added later on gradually.

Thanks

Used to follow Royal Canadian Airforce Exercises for women XBX when I was 46. I could never cross level 1. Can do that now too, at 59. The downloadable plan is in the Net. I lost my book with the exercises.

Went for Yoga. Has the book with photos still with me. The master taught me some stretches. Did not think me capable of Suryanamaskar, but I will try with the videos on the Net.

Thanks a lot.

in reply toMRA13

Once I could manage 25 Surya Namaskars. Now I find difficulty with even 1.

In fact your posting, has got me motivated to get my lazy bones to work. :-D

Thanks
