Although there have been no formal coconut oil loading studies in humans that address lipid changes, there is strong indirect evidence that regular use of coconut oil will raise blood cholesterol and increase risk of thrombogenic conditions (e.g. deep vein thrombosis, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attacks, etc). The evidence is based upon documentation showing that lauric acid (C12) is a very strong promoter of raising serum LDL-cholesterol levels (and total cholesterol). Individuals using coconut oil for their medium chain fatty acid composition often don’t realize that more than 50% of coconut oil consists of the saturated fat, Lauric acid (see chart that follows). Coconut oil also contains other established cholesterol-raising saturated fats, which include myristic acid (18%) and palmitic acid (8%). In total, of all the fatty acids in coconut oil, approximately 75% include saturated fats that are well documented to increase serum levels of total and LDL-cholesterol (lauric, myristic and palmitic acids).

•Coconut oil is 92% saturated fat.[2] That's a higher saturated fat concentration than butter, and over twice the saturated fat level of lard.
•One tablespoon of the stuff contains 60% of the daily recommended limit of saturated fat.[3] If you take a tablespoon with each meal plus fry your eggs, bacon, and goat burgers in it, don't be surprised when you wind up in heart surgery having it taken out of your arteries with a plumber's helper.
•About half the saturated fat in coconut oil is in the form of lauric acid.[2] While a few scientific studies suggest that lauric acid raises HDL cholesterol more than it raises LDL cholesterol[4][5] and that lauric acid may even be better for your overall cholesterol picture than monounsaturated fats (like the ones in soybean oil or canola oil),[6] there are no studies showing that the combination of all saturated fats found in coconut oil (including the half that aren't lauric acid) is any less unhealthy than other saturated fats.[citation needed] In fact, nearly 17% of coconut oil is myristic acid, which is known to be horrible for your cholestrol picture.[7]
•Coconut oil advocacy as a health food is often linked to denialism of the role of cholesterol (specifically, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides) in heart disease.[citation needed]
•Coconut oil advocacy is mainly from unscrupulous players in the dietary fad and food woo industries who sell the stuff;[citation needed] it is probably not helpful to the debate to invoke claims of a southeast Asian government conspiracy. The truth is bad enough as it is.
•Kevin Trudeau promotes taking coconut oil, which is probably a good sign you should run, not walk, in the other direction.
•Coconut oil is sold as Copha[wp] and used in making Rice Crispie treats in some countries,[8] among other things.
•Coconut oil contains negligible cholesterol, which is not to say it won't raise your cholesterol[4] — just not as much as tallow.[citation needed]
•If your taste or texture relies on saturated fat, virgin coconut oil is about the best you can use. That doesn't make it good.
@norreal
Polynesains,Tokelauans and Sri Lankans consume the largest amount of coconut and CO among the world population ( more than 50% of food calories in some cases) .Their serum cholesterol numbers are at low & safe level. The heart disease in these populations are the bare minimum .In Sri Lanka where the predominant dietary fat comes from coconut , death rate due to Ischemic heart diseases is 1 in 100000 where as this figure is ranging from 16 to 187 in countries with little CO consumption.
Proof of the pudding is in Eating
You will find wealth of information at www,coconutoil.com which may help to dispel the myth about CO
Coastal region in India mainly Kerala, they mostly use coconut oil for everyday use and there are no higher cases of CVD. Cholesterol itself is not the cause of the CVD.
Even Ankel Keys had given up the idea that cholesterol is cause of the CVD.
True .CO increases only the small dense LDL which is found in the arterial plaque ,Cholesterol by itself is not bad .It is the chronic inflammation caused by simple carbohydrates is the root cause of heart disease.Cholesterol is a 'good samaritan' which is sent by liver to heal the inflammation and gets trapped and earns a bad name in the process.-
Yes, some part of coconut is used to produce cholesterol lowering statins. However, that does not mean taking coconut oil as standalone (without consuming the other parts of the fruit) in a non coconut producing area will have same outcome!
@norreal
It is no(t)real that triglycerides are coming from CO as stated in your post

Even the increase in LDL-C caused by CO is in the form of large fluffy LDL ..Please be informed that there are four different forms in which LDL cholesterol is present .The ApoB pattern( small dense LDL ) which is present in VLDL , Lp(a) & IDL is the one which requires attention. ApoB / ApoA-1 ratio is the strongest predictor of heart disease according to recent studies which is also accepted by American Heart Institute .CO increases large fluffy LDL and reduces small dense LDL .Triglycerides are mainly comming from carbohydrates and CO has nothing to do with it.

Unquote you
Honestly, do you believe in the above ?
It is the carbohydrate advocacy group for more than half-century which has invented the low -fat- hypothesis and propagated the SF myth that dietary fat causes heart disease..Yet ,not a single citation worth its salt can be made relating heart disease to dietary fat so far .On the other hand , thousands of citations can be made for the contrary .Now , I leave it to you to deduce which advocacy group is unscrupulous and which diet is a fad diet
CO advocacy group in this Forum are not financed by any business house . They are propelled by a sheer commitment and goodwill to help fellow diabetics in this Forum and nothing more
The gist of my submission is why not take natural butter and olive oil?
medfree: Good! Is that really 30 quarts? You know some part of Coconut has Statin too! So having access to the whole fruit versus just oil in a non coconut producing region could be two different things.
agreed. Sometimes food in natural habitat works differently. Some part of the Coconut Fruit is used in making cholesterol lowering Statins. Is there proof that coconut oil, without other parts of the fruit (Coconut Milk) is as effective in non coconut producing regions?
Shooter George who is from Kerala and who, I believe consume coconut oil for cooking, can offer his best comment.
ShooterGeorge is himself an interesting example. Does he also advocate CO?
Thank you Suthary for the video .I am not able to understand the language but I can very well understand the spirit behind Dr Gopalakrishnan's speech dispelling the Coconut oil & cholesterol myth
@ norreal : Please read the link below particularly the cross links provided thereof on saturated fat myth surrounding CO.
I have also provided another link on an article by Paul scott writing on the works of Dr Krauss and his co-worker who have done ground breaking work on sub-LDL particles which has become the foundation for today's new bio-markers predicting heart health.I hope you are aware of the fact that old markers - LDL,HDL.TC.TG by themselves do not predict the heart health adequately. .Saturated fat dogma is out dated .Satuarted fat increases healthy cholesterol There are different forms of LDL-C and only one particular form - small dense LDL - contributes to atherosclerotic plaque .Saturated fats increases large buoyant LDL particles which act like HDL-C particles and are good .Dietary carbohydrates promote small dense LDL particles which are unfriendly to heart health.These are unquestionable facts supported by recent research findings
CO contains saturated fat which increases HDL and good component of LDL cholesterol.I hope you are aware of the fact that LDL-C has two components -good and bad ..Majority of the people are in a whirlpool of wrong belief about saturated fat ,,thanks to the seriously flawed diet-heart hypothesis authored by Ancel Keys in mid-20th century. Good that Ayurveda has not been influenced by this wrong hypothesis and consequently by cholesterol myth .Still people, including many doctors, find it difficult to come out of the paradigm paralysis created by wrong nutritional guidelines based on a wrong hypothesis
You`can not convince people unless they are fired by a quest for knowing the truth. I have lectured to my friends several times on cholesterol myth and yet they will ask " Do you take eggs with or without yoke ?"Not surprising to me ! It may take another 100 years for this myth to vanish just as it has taken 100 yrs for people to realize the evils of tobacco
Absolutely. Virgin coconut oil prepared as per the rigid stipulations to be followed in doing so is an excellent ingredient that can bring about all round wellness without any side effects.
