Why there is apprehension / reluctance when a doctor advises insulin for the first time....?

I think the fears are unfounded.Most diabetic drugs do have side effects and their effectiveness also gets reduced over time.If the doctor prescribes insulin,better accept and go for it.

You are absolutely right. As insulin is not available in any other form than injectables, the pharma companies have taken utmost care to provide with the thinnest and shortest needles which are user friendly. When we come to cost,the normal human insulins are cheap and made cheaper since last one month following price control.Carrying vials are a bit difficult but pens are available and we can use them permanently/disposable pens if for a short period. Of course when the beta cells getting destroyed progressively we are supposed to increase the dose and there is no other way.

In spite of all these, a patient should understand that a doctor prescribes Insulin when it is absolutely needed...i.e either for survival or to get a good control.
