Suggest a pain killer / reducer / eliminator for the pains I suffer with SEVERE Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy plus 4 herniated discs?

From the moment I wake up till I go to sleep, I suffer from a variety of pains, from mild tingling, burning, itching of the skin at various places to sharp pains from my waist downwards. Even as I wake up, the small of the back and waist hurt; the hips, buttocks and the soles of my feet, with a burning pain; the thighs, calves and foot as if a live wire runs through them (making me unable to walk even a few steps), the foot and instep hurt as if a nail is being driven through them. My knee joint hurts every-time I try to walk. It's a miserable life of pain. I wake up in the middle of the night with muscle pulls, catches and cramps that are excruciating. I drink about 20 glasses of water everyday, to reduce the pain. But it does not seem to help. Doctors have asked me to avoid over-the-counter pain-killers, in order to avoid damage to my kidneys. Both my feet are permanently swollen with edema. Whenever the cramps and pain hit my pelvic cage, I lose control over my bladder. It is extremely embarrassing as well.

Is there some other remedy to alleviate the pain?

I am a Type Ii diabetic for 25 years, now on insulin, but my sugar levels are fairly under control 90 to 140 mg / dcl and I am 74 years old. I also suffer from sciatic pains due to an injury sustained many years ago caused by four herniated discs in my lower back..

Please help!.

Sir,I presume you are from the services, seeing your I.D.If so,please accept my salute.

Your pain is understandable, being sufferer with three degenerated discs.I am managing the pain with certain exercises shown to me by a phisio therapist.I also do acupressure. Some how the pain is under control but on rare( S.O.S ) occasions,I take a tablet prescribed by Pain Management Clinic,St.John's Hospital,Bangalore. They assured me that the particular medicine does not cause any collateral damage. But I am always hesitant to take the tablet for fear of internal damage.

I have heard that ALA (600mg Antioxidant like Alpha Lipoic acid) helps. But where can I get it? What is the brand-name in which it is sold?

Please let me know.

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy means damage of blood vessels due to diabetes. The damaged vessels cannot be restored, This is what my doctor says and they are not able to prescribe satisfactory medicine/s. I am also suffering from severe burning of my foot and pain upto my foreleg.

Your condition is largely similar to mine. I am 78+ and on Insulin for last 25 years.

Try neucobal forte (with 1500 mg of methycobal) for peripheral neuropathy. May have to take Injections of the same initially.

Arsenicum Album 200- a homeopathic drug also helps.

I have a different suggestion to offer:

1. Are you living in a place which is very cold. Do you feel the same problems when you are in a hotter place like Chennai.

2. Yr cramps could be due to gas related issues. Avoid root vegetables, raw banana etc., from food.

3. Pl check for spondylities... consult an Ortho.

1.I live in Mumbai

2. I have no gas related problems

3. I do not have spondilitis (sp?)

4. I have 4 prolapsed discs (L2-L3,L3-L4,L4-L5,L5-S1) and Sciatica (my Orthopaedician has confirmed this)

5. I have Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Yes, you are partly right.

I have edema of both feet with numbness (a permanent feature) despite taking 81mg of Aspirin everyday with two caps of fish-oil. A daily massage to improve circulation.

My urologist and nephrologist have cleared me. My creatinine levels are within limits.

I sleep 9 hours a day. 7 hours at night and 2 in the afternoon. I drink about 20 glasses of water a day (Too much says my doctor). My mind is alert at all times. I do not dream at all (at least, I do not remember any). I continue to put on weight because of a lack of exercise (though I do stretching exercises all day).MY BP remains at 120/80 and my sugar levels, 90-100 fasting and 120-140 PP. I take 10 units of Insulin (70/30) human mixtard in the morning and 12 units bat night.

Sir,

I lowered my carbo intake and got relief from numbness in my left foot. Now it is cured. I am also taking ALA.
