My dietician had prohibited me from eating oatmeal i.e porridge. However she had no objection if oats are eaten like upma.I have read that if you choose to eat oats, steel cut oats are the best. am looking forward to some light being thrown on this subject by our learned bloggers.

Thanks for the piece of information. You are correct. Any food in the form of porridge will get digested quickly and will increase sugar level in blood suddenly. It is always better to take ragi, oats and other cereals in solid form such as upma, dosa and idli.

Venkatramanaji, try adding Germinated wheat bran (Bagrry's) to the oats. I am insulin dependent and survive almost entirely on this combo. Also I use oats without milk. (Only boiled water and low sodium salt). I use this whenever I am hungry between meals.

Good Sir. You may add a fresh salad like Tomato/ Carrot / Cucumber without salt

As answer to my earlier Querry ,many bloggers (who are regular and very knowledgable) had suggested Oats also high in Carbohydrate and hence to avoid if possible. I myself used to take Oats dailly but know has cut down to Twice a week.

Is Upma good for diabetic ,similarly Rava Idli ?

My F 115 and PP 145 has been constant for 2 years(1mg Amaryl once at night) ,but by adopting to LCHF food and exercise in morning and walking 1hr in the evening for 2 weeks it went down drastically as a result I fainted last week..Doctor advised me to earlier normal diet.

Any comments please

oats has very low glycemic index.it is digested and absorbed very slowly in body.it give a sense of satiety and controls appetite.helps reducing high cholesterol in blood.

apart from this a cup of oat provides 6gm of protein and 4gm of fiber,70%of daily requirement of Manganese.good source of vit. b1 and magnesium.

I too started taking oats primarily as adai made up of 1 onion + 1 tomato + 4 table scope oats + +i table spoon wheat + half salt occassionally with selected vegetables which can be taken raw or easily cooked in adai, almost once in a day..... this is very tasty or I started to like it

the other preparation oats milk dry nuts and fruits like paal paayasasam without sugar is also ok, sometimes

both are quick to prepare, no fuss

if I take oats once in a day that makes my bowl movement better, I don't get indigestion and gas problems, I think my system digests it better and comfortable!

I am a user of insulin 12 in the morning and 20 in the night. I take this only after my breakfast in the morning and dinner in the night. This is as per the advice of my doctor. However, i shall consult with him again during my next review.

I have not been advised nor read anywhere that insulin should be taken on empty stomach. I have been taking insulin mostly after meals. I think it doesn't really matter much.

sachu profile image
sachu in reply to kontu

I don think there is time restrictions for taking insulin. Doctor says u can have it after food also. As most of the people r mistaken it , that soon after the injection u have to have the food. So if u don get the food like that, in places, u will go panic n that tend to decrease ur sugar or u will face some other tension. So always better take insulin soon after ur food. Which u too will be comfortable. This is wat doctor said.....

I fully agree with that, when ever I take Oats for the breakfast my sugar level PP is high. In my opinion, Oats for a diabetics should be avoided?

in reply to

Yes, oats should be completely avoided, IF you want to keep your blood sugar down without taking drugs.

effects of USING RAGI (MILLETS) ON DIABETES?

sainarce profile image

Most doctors advise not to include oats in your food and it certainly digests quickly and the sugar level increases. When the opinions differ from people to people, I sincerely feel that diabetic patients should completely avoid taking oats. It is better and wiser to simply forget this dish. There are thousands of dishes a diabetic patient can take and why not we select those items and live peacefully.

It is a type of grain and is called as "Jayee" in hindi. It is taken as Dalia with milk in the morning.

Glycemic Value for Oats is 55 and that of rice average is also 55. Just substantiate how oats is superior to Rice. Often rice is blamed for diabetes. People talking on data are not talking about Brown Rice, which is far more superior to oats in all aspects.

Our body works 24 hrsX7 days non stop. Whether glucose is released in 2hours or delayed release does not matter; only total quantity consumed does matter.

Please do not get attracted by glamorous ads appearing on TV about oats.

Human body needs 15 to 20 grams of fiber a day. This may be obtained by consuming just 100 grams of vegetables in a day. Too much of fiber is also detrimental.

chitrabhanuthekkedath profile image
chitrabhanuthekkedath in reply to rsridhar220962

Thanks for the information. Only problem is brown rice is not available in market. Manually husk removed rice is available in Kerala which is a better alternative to oats since absorption is slow in the body.

rsridhar220962 profile image
rsridhar220962 in reply to chitrabhanuthekkedath

Brown Rice Is available in plenty everywhere; in particular in Kerala.

In Bangalore is cheaper than white rice.

Kindly understand that whenever we consume carb, we should get glucose up; quite similar to we see increase in our bank account when we deposit money to our account.

We have to bother more when the draining of sugar is not taking place. Whole approach to reverse metabolism for diabetes patient is in this.

Oats is one of the best foods for diabetic and heart patients. It helps control blood sugar and its fibre content helps you digest the food without much problem. It's rich in micro-nutrients also.

After going through the controversial comments on oats for diabetic patients, Oats is not bad if one knows how to consume it. please comment on my opinion. I am a diabetic patient of type 1 for the past 15 years. However, my fasting level is 118 and pp 145 almost constant for the past 10 months.

Please throw some light on my opinion.

Dear Readers,

I have gone thru to all these comments and found few suggestions very effective for diabetics.I am a diabetic since since 2001, my diabetes is controlled by having one mg. Amaryl1 taking after my morning tea before break fast. Let me please tell you that oat is good for break fast for diabetic if it is taken with milk and NO SUGAR, cut small pieces of Dates ( khazoor ) in it would make it tasty. Oat and Porridge are two different things. Oat is the Barley ( Jau ) and Porridge is Wheat ( Gehun Ka Daliya ). Do not take porridge.

If your sugar level is more than 200+, just take for TEN DAYS Amryal 2 before starting your Breakfast and and after 10 days go for your blood sugar check. you will find a drastic change then switch to Amrayl1 for maintaining your blood sugar. Go for a morning walk for half an hour. Morning walk lowers your Cholesterol + sugar level and Evening walk lowers your Blood sugar. Eat Karela vegetable cooked in a water and not fried, chew 15 curry leaves and neem leaves and say CHEERS to diabetes.

DR. TONY ALMEIDA ( Bombay Kidney Specialty expert ) made the extensive

experiments with perseverance and patience and discovered a successful treatment for diabetes. Now a days a lot of people, old men & women in particular suffer a lot due to Diabetes.

Ingredients:

1 - Wheat flour 100 gm

2 – Gum (of tree) (gondh) 100 gm

3 - Barley 100 gm

4 - Black Seeds (kalunji) 100 gm

Method of Preparation put all the above ingredients in 5 cups of water. Boil it for 10 minutes, keep steering and put off the fire. Allow it to cool down by itself.

When it is cold, filter out the seeds and preserve the water in a glass jug or bottle..

How to use it?

Take one small cup of this water every day early morning when your stomach is empty.

Continue this for 7 days. Next week repeat the same but on alternate days. With these 2 weeks of treatment you will wonder to see that you have become normal and can eat normal food without problem.

Note: A request is to spread this to as many as possible so that others can also take benefit out of it.

SPB MESSAGE

SINCE THESE ARE ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS, TAKING THEM IS NOT HARMFUL. SO THOSE WHO ARE SKEPTICAL ABOUT THIS TREATMENT MAY STILL TRY IT WITHOUT ANY HARM. WORST CASE SCENARIO WILL BE THAT YOU REMAIN STILL SAME AS YOU WERE BEFORE .

Good Luck

Oat swollen in diluted milk ( don't boil it) for two hours is good for breakfast. However oats in India and in UK/USA are of different quality and give different energy. So one need to be very careful about the quantity. I feel Oat is a healthy food in controlled quantity.

Then what's fit for human consumption? Is there any food that's not fit for human consumption? There people who eat dog meat, there people who eat snakes, the real poisonous ones. Can one say that they're inferior to us? Please note we Indians were importing wheat from USA. The wheat they were sending to us was not fit for human consumption. Still we ate them.

Dear Medfree - It was last wednesday(26th June) that I fainted due to Hypo by following LCHF and Continueing with medication ( Amaryl 1mg Once)

The FF was 100 and PP 140 on 27th morning. I am 66 years old but quite active

However since last One week I have discountinued all medication ,nor have exercised( Due to weakness ) but ate normal diet . Today my results after week are FF 103 PP 148

My doctor has advised me not to take any medicine for a month with normal routine and check after one month

Is it Ok ? Stability in blood sugar after One week without Medication is surprising . Seek your valuable Input on these developments Please.
