I am 54, my blood sugar levels are fasting: 126 and post lunch: 158. I am not taking any medicine.

I joined the forum 3 minutes back and this is my first post.

You are defintely pre diabetic and should consult a physician for any advise on medicines. From personal experience, it is very easibly controllable at this stage and you should try your best to bring your sugar under control naturally. This is easily done by reducing your dinner intake, having an early dinner and spacing out meals. If you are over weight, loosing a couple of kilos helps a lot. It is a good investment to buy a gluco meter and take a note of what food impacts your sugar.

Do not take lightly and take immediate action would be my advise.

Fasting blood sugar level must be less than 100 mg/dL and post-prandial blood sugar -less than 140 mg/dL. Metformin treatment of people at risk for type 2 diabetes may decrease their chances of developing the disease, although intensive physical exercise and dieting work significantly better for this purpose.
