We have in our digestive system a gland called pancreas, that produces an enzyme called insulin. This enzyme is essential for the body to utilize the food that we eat as energy. It so happens sometimes that the pancreas is unable to produce any insulin or adequate insulin for the requirements of the body.It may also happen that even when insulin is produced, the body is unable to utilize it because of what is called insulin resistance. So when we eat food,it gets converted into glucose but does not get into our body cells as energy due to absence of insulin. The glucose remains in the blood and gets excreted through urine.Higher than normal blood sugar levels is called diabetes. You can go to any diagnostic laboratory in the morning on empty stomach. They will take your blood and urine samples and tell you whether you are diabetic after testing the samples. You will have to give samples twice, one fasting and another after 1.5 t 2 hours after breakfast
