I have been on metformin for about 11 to 12 years. Recently, my B12 readings are less than normal. Read metformin causes B12 deficiency. For the last few years, I have been taking meformin 250mg 3 times a day right after meal. My latest Hba1c is 5.02. Average glucose (MBG i think) is 97. FBS is 97. Please suggest if there is anything that I can use to replace metformin fully or partially.
Is there any replacement for metformi... - Diabetes & Hypert...
Is there any replacement for metformin to get around B12 problem with it?
Have you talked to your doc about your B12 readings? There are many foods that contain B12 and B12 supplements if needed.
you need to talk to your GP
There are alternatives to metformin but you really need to talk things through with your GP
the normal treatment for B12 absorption problems is injections though if metformin is the cause then high dose supplements might work.
The symptoms of B12 deficiency overlap considerably with diabetes which means that it often goes undiagnosed and treated.
Ironically there seems to be some evidence that whilst metformin reduces dietary uptake of B12 it can improve metabolism in your cells.
Metformin may not be the only reason for your low B12 levels - as you get older your stomach acidity tends to reduce which will also cause problems absorbing B12 (and the symptoms are very similar to high stomach acidity - eg acid reflux).
If you need specific help getting your GP to recognise and act on the low B12 then please pop over to the PAS forum for support.
