Symprove Probiotic: Results of the SymPD trial?

In the Summer 2024 edition of the research magazine of Parkinson’s UK, I was surprised to see page 14: parkinsons.org.uk/sites/def...

"Clinical trial results showing potential for Symprove"

"Covid-19 hugely delayed this research but the initial results have now been shared."

"The results suggest that Symprove alters gut bacteria, changing levels of certain bacteria that might have an overall beneficial effect. Symprove also seems to be helping Parkinson’s drugs to work more quickly (achieving quicker ‘time-to-ON’) and therefore helping with movement symptoms. There is also evidence to suggest an improvement in non-motor symptoms, especially in anxiety, fatigue, constipation and sleep"

"We are waiting on the publication of the full results and will be working to understand what’s next. The results from this study offer more evidence for probiotic use in Parkinson’s."

The only published results I can find are from April 2024: Effects of a four-strain probiotic on inflammatory markers in Parkinson’s disease: a multicentre randomised controlled trial (the SymPD study) neurology.org/doi/10.1212/W...

This paper also refers to "Preliminary results from the SymPD trial suggest that this four-strain probiotic can enrich the gut microbiota with bacteria having anti-inflammatory properties, reduce ‘time to on’, and non-motor symptoms burden in patients with PD and constipation."

But when will they publish the full results and why does it take so long?!

"Symprove contains four strains of bacteria: Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Enterococcus faecium.

Daily Essential

Symprove is a non-dairy, water-based probiotic drink that's designed to improve digestive health and replenish beneficial gut bacteria. The bacteria are grown on germinated barley extract, which also contains a prebiotic food source.

Symprove's water-based solution is intended to deliver the bacteria directly to the gut without triggering digestion. The barley-fermented water solution also helps the bacteria stay viable for up to five months.

Some people take Symprove daily long-term, especially if they have more serious health issues. Others may start and stop taking it as needed.

Side effects of Symprove may include changes to your stool, such as constipation or mild diarrhea. These side effects should go away quickly as your body adjusts to the supplement."

Agreed. I've been taking Symprove since November 27th 2024. It took 10 days to see some effects and they were good. I haven't needed a Movicol laxative since December 6th. Then Christmas struck & with the disruption to eating patterns & a few glasses of champagne I had a few bouts of diarrhoea. Unfortunately this has continued post Christmas & I'm still suffering with it. I've halved the daily dose but that hasn't stopped it. It's now increased my anxiety for going out!! ☹️
