Inulin for Gut Health
My husband and I both take this. I read about it when researching resistant starches for constipation help. It seems to have many uses. It does help with constipation and with fruits, vegetables and a Mediterranean style diet has helped with this. Also his cholesterol has really lowered and is no longer pre diabetic.
It’s quite cheap, there are many stockists and you can use it to replace sugar. It’s a fine white powder.
I take it as well
I use inulin too. The downside is the gas from the fermentation process. The upside is improved gut microbiome modulation and increased short chain fatty acid production as well as reduced inflammatory markers in the gut. Inulin also decreases endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) which is involved in PD pathology.
Inulin is the active prebiotic in PS-128, but at a relatively small dose in that product.
In the following study utilizing various fiber products in PwP, It was shown that inulin was most effective at increasing short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) :

Here is a relevant study quote :
' After fiber fermentation, butyrate concentration varied between 25.6 ± 16.5 µmol/g and 203.8 ± 91.9 µmol/g for Parkinson's patients and between 52.7 ± 13.0 µmol/g and 229.5 ± 42.8 µmol/g for controls. Inulin had the largest effect, while xanthan gum had the lowest production. '
