Excess Vit. B

Good morning everyone,

I have a vit. B6 level of 56.8, much higher than the maximum reference level of 18.0. I didn't take a specific supplement but only complex B. We all know that vit.B6 negatively interferes with the proper functioning of Levodopa, so it is necessary for me to drastically reduce the B6 level. I have a fairly controlled diet without excesses so it's difficult for me to know to move. Surely the first step will be to interrupt with thw B complex. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you very much

There are Vitamin B- complexes without B6. It is advisable not to take a B6 supplement for the next 2 months given the stacking of B6 due to the long half-life and the probably too large doses. For PWP, it is usually wise to take a supplement of B6 in the less toxic P5P form, but in smaller amounts. I absolutely cannot do without it myself, but I am already at my maximum with 3 mg! It is wise to regularly have your B values and certainly your B6 tested to find your own good balance.

I am very curious about the amount of B6 in your B- complex and in what form (pyridoxine or P5P). Also how long you have taken this and if you have C/L medication, how much carbidopa you get per day. Merci!

Thanks Esperanto for answering me so quickly and in detail. The B6 contained in my B Complex is Pyridoxine in the amount of 10.0mg. per capsule that I have been taking for two months, the B1 level is also high (98 out of 85 max reference) and its quantity per capsule is 25.0mg. My Parkinson's was diagnosed almost 6 years ago and since then I have never taken more than 2x100(+25) Sinemet equal to four halves tablets once a day. Evidently I could feel better if I took more Levodopa but I fear the negative effects. I take also one Xadago 50mg. with the first half of the morning. And you? How long have Parkinson's?

Buona giornata Fed1000.

Very valuable information that with 10 mg B6, so within the so-called new safe EU standard of 12 mg, you can still get an overdose, despite 50 mg carbidopa per day which can still break down part of the B6. This does not seem to be an exception because the latest messages from members on HU show a similar picture. Another warning for multivitamin and B-complexes, especially with B6 in pyridoxine form.

The more test results available the better this is. I am making an overview of this and will share it with a researcher from Radboudumc in the Netherlands. If necessary, you can also chat with me.

My first diagnosis is from 3 years ago. Situation is now fairly stable, after a disastrous start precisely because of an unrecognized B6 deficit. The peripheral neuropathy I have suffered as a result currently causes me the most problems, but now seems to have stopped in development. 🤞Medication from 10 x 10/100 Sinemet reduced to 1 x 10/100 in half. Partly by P5P supplementation, but certainly also by an adapted anti-stress lifestyle, diet and exercises.

I'm glad you found the right direction. Thanks for all valuable information. I wish you all the best.

Info on pyridoxine toxicity vs P5P here: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

Vitamin B6 interferes with levodopa medication primarily if the two meet up in the digestive tract. In my experience high blood levels of B6 do not significantly inactivate levedopa.

Tanks for the information as always impeccable.

Fed, the same for me .

B6 = 97.7

September 2023

I rarely take b complex and three days before blood tests I had taken one of these which contains 50 mg of b6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride. pyridoxine-5-phosphate).

I suspect that B6 is not being depleted very quickly by the body, which means it could build up, hence long breaks for me.

Hi Gio', same thing. Let's see how much remain in circulation, but it shouldn't have such a short half-life. Apart from this, the important thing is that it doesn't cause ant "damage". I wish you all the best.

....sorry - any "damage".

Bonsoir Gio, that also seems like a pretty high B6 value. Do you have the same maximum reference value as Fed1000 of 18.0. I or do they measure with a different unit in your case. That is often laboratory dependent. I also wonder how often you estimate you take this B-complex and since when. The fact that you still have such a high value is indeed due to the very long half-life of 25 to 32 days. So it will indeed take more than 2 months before your B6 level is somewhat within reasonable limits again. What is your possible daily intake of carbidopa? Grazie in anticipo. Bellissimo giardino d'autunno a proposito!

good morning Esperanto,

Yes, my exam is the same as Fed's.

I take 6/8 Madopar 100/25 a day, b1 injection 2 for week with break.

I take this b-complex occasionally, about 3/4 a month, not daily.

Gio’ did you also check B1?

Gioc profile image
Gioc in reply to Fed1000

No, but I've been doing them for years now and I have no problems, everything else is fine too, only 202 out of 200 (out of 2) total cholesterol. I already know that b1 would be very high, but the half-life of thiamine b1 in the blood is a couple of hours. B6 deserves more attention because it partially cancels ldopa, or not?

Fed1000 in reply to Gioc

If ingested together or in the space of less than two hours it creates interaction. See Esperanto posts.

Thank you Gio for this addition. Your B6 intake via your B- complex is about 5 to 7 mg per day. That seems very reasonable, even perhaps too little given your fairly high carbidopa use of 150-200 mg per day. But your test shows undeniably that your B6 value is really way too high! You could conclude again from this that carbidopa breaks down (much) less B6 than expected. It's really high time to do some proper research on this, given the accumulation risk of B6 by a half-life of a month!

Desert Harvest B-Complex has no B6 in it. See their website.

Hi Gwendoline, thank you very much for the information about this rare combination. While most of us need B6 supplementation, an overdose often occurs due to excessive intake. Due to its usually good absorption and long half-life, a stacking effect can easily occur. Unlike most vitamins, it can take several months for the B6 levels to return to normal. As a temporary or permanent solution, a B-Complex without B6 is Indispensable! However regularly testing your B6 levels remains important, as a deficiency can easely occur with very risky consequences.

The Desert Harvest B-Complex without B6 you mentioned does have a somewhat random dosage of vitamins. The amounts are based on 50 mg or 50 micrograms. Nevertheless, it seems safe to me and I have included it in the list of more or less responsible B complexes.

desertharvest.com/shop/b-co...

I also came across a multivitamin from the same brand without B6. It is lower in dosage but based on the daily recommended amount. However, it is missing consideration for the absorption of the different vitamins. Nevertheless also recommended.

desertharvest.com/shop/mult...

Both products are included in the overview of safely dosed B Complexes and Multivitamins.
