Low Protein with Mucuna

My husband who is taking a standardized supplement of mucuna has been advised to restrict his diet to 70 grams animal protein a day and to take it 30 minutes before a meal.

This does not seem like a lot of protein although he is eating a lot of nuts and seeds on the lowish carbohydrate diet he has also been advised to follow. Beans and lentils and grains are not allowed.

I was wondering if anyone else has been restricting protein this much?

I've done a search for protein restriction when taking Mucuna but can't find anything on the topic.

Search for protein restriction and levodopa.

There's helpful info about protein needs with regards to l-dopa / macuna in this excellent video (a must watch for everyone IMO!). From memory it's in the Q&A

I take mucuna and i don’t restrict protein like that, I just eat it right after my last dose kicks in so it’s effective. I do eat eggs an milk products for breakfast which digest faster - in an hour or two - but no meats until after the las dose.

Thanks for your reply. When you say your last dose do you mean the last dose of the day? My husband is taking it every 1.5 hours all day and evening to have any effect. How long is it before the mucuna is effective for you? He would love to have bacon and eggs for breakfast once a week and an omelet for lunch sometimes.

I'd say, experiment and see what works, for YOU. Not everyone is affected, apparently.

Or, maybe, consider a long-acting form of dopamine (like Rytary) so if the protein intake gets in the way of absorption you only have to restrict it at certain times. A dose every hour and a half seems like a lot!

I for one, am a BEAR about protein intake. I think it is critical, along with the exercise to use it to build muscle.

Had to look it up. 70g protein is:

”2 rashers of thick bacon

1½ British pork sausages

Just over a third of an 8oz sirloin steak

5 slices of thin lunch ham

5 tbsp cooked mince

Half a patty of a large burger”

Do you eat quinoa?

“Quinoa and Health

One cup cooked provides about 8 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. Unlike some plant proteins, quinoa is a complete protein, meaning that it contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies cannot make on their own.”

I have been slowly replacing rice with quinoa in our meals so as not to scare the troups. White quinoa isn’t too strong and I mix it with the rice and rinse it then cook in rice cooker. No complaints yet!

“Is quinoa protein as good as meat protein?

Quinoa | Pablo's Quinoa

it's a full-fledged Meat substitute!

And it's a complete protein, one of the only plant foods that contains all nine of the essential amino acids in an almost perfect balance! And last but not least, quinoa has a high protein biological value (73%), similar to that of beef!”

I've found mucuna to be unpredictable with or without food and I don't trust the source.
