Macuna dosage

Can anyone give me advise on taking macuna. I have been trying to take macuna for several weeks but it appears it does not agree with me. I started taking British supplements capsules but felt really ill. Head really muzzy and vomiting. I stopped taking it and tried again with same result. I measured the amount of powder in a capsule to be about a quarter of a teaspoon so I opened all the capsules into a jar and have tried a tiny amount, all ok. I tried again today taking an eighth of a teaspoon. Feeling queasy and I am very unsteady on my feet. Does this mean it doesn't suit me. Does anyone else have this problem

Most mucuna preparations are an extract with a lot of levodopa, which will cause the nausea that you are experiencing. What you want is unconcentrated whole bean powder. It takes more to get a proper dose - a tablespoon or two, but less chance of nausea.

Thank you for the info. I will research the unconcentrated powder on line

if you take the capsule at the same time as a dose of eg madopar the madopar should last longer as the peak is at a different time, and the benserazide should stop it breaking down as fast which is what is making you nauseous.

British supplements now do a half dose capsule. I take both very successfully but the high dose makes me feel sleepy so I take in early evening.

My husband couldn't take a whole capsule. As it caused sickness and lockjaw which would last for half to a few hrs. I bought half dose from British supplements but have to half these again to avoid side effects.

Hi there. It's not surprising that you have nausea after taking in mucuna. It's all about the dosage (and quality of mucuna). I tried many extracts available on market. The results are the same either no effect at all or feel nauseated. After reviewing some medical publications on mucuna, I managed to find a more stable ground with dosage. I mix 6 grams of pure mucuna powder (not the extract) with 50mg Sinemet. Sinemet is needed because mucuna contains only levodopa, but carbidopa required because it prevents levodopa from being broken down before it reaches the brain. I make this mixture in the small cup (30g - 50g) of hot green tea and add a small spoon of honey to make taste more plateable. Let the mixture to infuse for 5-10 minutes and them drink it. The dosage can be adjusted to match you body's levodopa requirements. It it's still too strong for you then decrease Sinemet by half. Hope it helps you to feel better.

Thank you for your interesting comments. I should have said that the only meds I take are Rasagiline, diagnosed in 2019. I have been getting a bit slower and thought macuna might help me to stay off levadopa a bit longer. I was taking it it with 500mg of green tea extract.

In this case you can start with Zandopa (available on eBay). Mucuna in it made bioactive by the means of a proprietary component. Just instead of taking 9g (it's a size of an included measuring cap) take 2g only and then adjust your intake accordingly to your body's reaction on Zandopa.

My husband uses Natures Root organic powder. He needs a lot of c/l so give him half teaspoon in diluted juice like Ribena to bring him on. You can buy the proper measuring spoons on ebay.

I watched this interview. A professor Matt Jacobson, who has Parkinson's, basically stated that macuna and prescribed levadopa both do the same thing. He said you're better off taking levodopa, as it is more consistent and it's dosage and it is regulated by the FDA where makuna is not.

I just started my husband on Solaray Dopabean which is standardized to 15% and has an enteric coating on the capsule. He takes it with a reduced dose of sinemet and it seems to help him with no adverse effects. He has used it alone in between doses of sinemet as a bridge and still no GI symptoms so perhaps the enteric coating is what helps prevent that.

I take Macuna in the form of a capsule called "Shanty" which also has ashwagandha in it ... and some other herb.

I have not noticed any side effects. I take one capsule in the morning, and one capsule in the evening. I think it reduces my anxiety during the daytime and helps me sleep a bit better at night.

If you look on the British Supplements web page, and see reviews for macuna, you will see tha t they advise to take it with food, not on an empty stomach, and this should alleviate the nausea. After a week the body re adjusts and you should be able to take it without adverse effect. You don’t say what strength you were taking. They do a lower dose capsule as well, which might suit you better.
