Recently, a member asked for help with constipation. My partner Bill has PD and suffered with bouts of rather scary constipation for a long time. We tried many things and finally found a couple of remedies that really work:
1. Sublingual, high dose thiamine (Source Naturals, 100 mg; about $7 at Amazon). After about two weeks, this really cured the problem and has helped with other PD symptoms as well. We learned about it from Daphne Bryan’s book Parkinson’s and the B1 Therapy, which tells you all about it. Bill takes one-half sublingual tablet three times a week. He no longer needs other remedies for constipation!
2. Beet Blast smoothie. This is a recipe from the PD clinic. B drank an 8-oz. glass once a day, and it was usually fairly effective, plus it tastes pretty good. The recipe makes enough for about 3 glasses. Be aware that senna tea has a laxative effect and can be used alone for that purpose.
1 cup diced cooked beets, chilled
1 ½ cups diced frozen pineapple
½ avocado, diced
6 oz. carton of pineapple yogurt (other fruit flavors can also be used)
½ cup orange juice
½ cup senna tea (brewed for about 5 min. for mild effect and cooled)
Put everything in a blender and blend until smooth. Store in refrigerator.
3. One or two kiwi fruit and 4 dried prunes every day, plus exercise. This is not perfect but helps.

i'm glad you found what helps but that is a LOT of work... Many of us struggle with constipation ... me, too... very badly for a couple of months until I found a combination of things that worked 100% of the time with NO drugs or over-the-counter-stuff that can have a long term NEGATIVE effect on your intestines and colon
---------------------------
1. I bought this situp machine from Amazon. About $100.00
It's not advertised 'as' a situp bench, but as a 'weight bench.' I really shopped HARD for an back-adjustable bench as I'm not able to do a 'full situp'. This machine is PERFECT.
I do 4 sets of 20 (3/4 -- not the full 100% lay down) situps ... in 2 sets of 20. Then a few hours before eating, I'll do another 40.
HERE's the REAL magic trick! A vibration plate machine! It has saved me many times from excruciating foot and lower leg cramps. As I was trying to devise my "constipation solution" ... I started to stand on my vibration plate machine immediately after doing my situps.
BUT... I learned the BEST WAY to get my 'insides pumping'...
TRICK:
1) My machine has 2 motors for two different types of vibrations. I turn one of the motors OFF.
2) I stand with BOTH FEET on the SAME SIDE (normally you straddle your feet ... one to the left and one on the right side of the plate).
3) I set it on the LOWEST setting (a '1' -- it goes as high as '60'!). I have an Amazon echo and I tell Alexa: "2 minute timer." And now the machine shakes my body UP and DOWN ... UP and DOWN ... UP and DOWN ....
And you better believe... that i'm RUNNING TO THE TOILET pretty damn soon!
Am taking Magnesium Citrate 250 mg ( Only 1 tablet/ day which is only 125mg), it helps with bowel movement and also helps my foot cramping. I also eat 5 dry plumes regularly. Eating avocado is also good for us, bc it is very high in fiber and also help us produce more dopamine. You can get all this stuffs from Costco.
my partner’s neurologist recommended 1 part applesauce, 1 part prune juice, 1 part bran cereal. She would eat about a 1/2 cup each day for decent, but not magical, results.
I’ve tried everything from Metamucil to B1 thiamine and find that bisacodyl suppositories 10mg gives me quick results but I’m concerned about long term use. I’ve been taking B1 regimen along with Magnesium every day for 3 years. I will read your suggested books.
To a cup of warm water, add psyllium husks powder, ascorbic acid and a splash of apple cider vinegar. The psyllium forms a gel and softens matter in the colon.
We found 1 fiber tablet and 1 probiotic tablet in morning, and magnesium at night and my husband now currently goes most days... at least 6 out of 7, and mostly every day. He's had PD for 25 years and earlier would be maybe once a month.
I am surprised that noone has mentioned eating an apple everyday . It is so simple and it totally puts me right. If I miss having an apple in the evening I pay the price the next day.
My PD husband takes about 2 tablespoons of ground flax seed each morning with 1 - 2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil sprinkled on his oatmeal or other cereal every morning. He swears by this. He also takes magnesium which helps with cramping of the legs.
Hope this link works for you. Here's the descriptor Amazon uses, just in case you need to paste it in the search box:
Superior Source Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), 100 mg, Under The Tongue Quick Dissolve Sublingual Tablets, 100 Count, Increased Metabolism and Energy Production, Nervous System Support, Non-GMO
Are you located outside the U.S.? That might be the reason, because I just checked Amazon and it's still available here. You might want to try contacting the company directly at superiorsourcevitamins.com
I wasn’t able to find anything to help with the constipation. No diet or medicine touched it. I started using Dulcolax suppositories, but they contain bicosydryl, so I stated doing a saline enema every other day and have been doing that for at least a year. Plus I carry my own water bottle everywhere and drink water all day. GI dr says to do whatever it takes to get the waste out.
I’ve tried many things. What seems to work best: DAILY coconut oil in first cup of coffee, and stool softener(s). Can’t let a day go by without success. Then ducolax. Remember EVERYTHING SLOWS DOWN!! Add a regular touch of walking and KEEP MOVING. (And keep smiling).
Hello, Parkwarrior. Can you please clarify the description of vitamin B1 that you use?
Your initial post mentions brand Source Naturals, 100mg sublingual, which I could only find in non-sublingual forms when I searched Amazon . However, further down in the replies, you supply a link for brand Superior Source, which IS available in sublingual form. Also, the Superior Source version is Thiamin Mononitrate. Does anyone know how that differs from the suggested Thiamin Hydrochloride?
My apologies for the mistake in linking sublingual B1 to Source Naturals. The correct brand is Superior Source. Before you use it, I strongly urge you to read Daphne Bryan's book "Parkinson's and the B1 Therapy," also available at Amazon for only about $10. It explains the reasons for taking B1, the mononitrate/hydrochloride differences, and gives the protocol.
