Parkinson's puts extra stress on the lumbar spine due to our tendency to bend forward. Sciatica can be a result of this stress. Sciatica is caused by impingement upon the sciatic nerve, usually as a result of lumbar intervertebral disc problems. Fish oil has been shown to mitigate this kind of problem. I adopted a high fish oil diet and my sciatica is now in remission. I have written about this here:

and here: Salmon – The best source of beneficial fish oils. Is it safe to eat? tinyurl.com/27b3ahw7

There are other potential causes of sciatica, bone spurs and piriformis nerve impingement, but these are less frequent.

Sorry, I have already set forth everything I know on this subject and cannot think of anything further to add.

I had severe spinal stenosis and all that. Tried avoiding surgery for many years by trying every alternative known to man. When I finally had surgery I really regretted putting it off for so long. The relief was miraculous.

If you are in pain all the time from this, I suggest you consult a surgeon and see if you have a structural problem that requires surgery or if its mild to moderate and you can put it off and try other things. Be prepared to have an MRI.

Thanks for your reply. I got an MRI done recently. L5 got better, however, L3 and 4 not so good. My Neurologist also did an EMG and my nerves are not damaged and he said I don’t need back surgery. A friend of mine just had back surgery recently and he’s still in a lot of pain and too early to tell if it’s going to get better. I see a Chiropractor 2x a week and PT 2x a week. Most of the time, I feel relieved but only temporarily.

I had surgery at the VA for spinal stenosis last January and it relieved all the pain. It took about 2 weeks to recover fully. I would do it again in a minute.

Any time for any reason surgery is being considered for non emergency treatment it must be weighed against the side effects and chance of failed surgery.

Every surgical procedure is an insult to your body and it takes a long time for some people to recover. Consider all options open to you.

(exactly why I waited 7 years. But in my case, it was the only thing that helped) yes, it does have it's downsides. My surgeon recommended not only a Laminectomy to relieve the nerve impingement, but also fusion to prevent future instability. I have lost a great deal of flexibility because of the fusion, and, it put stress on the levels above and below the site which led to a second surgery being necessary, which has left me even less flexible. But overall, the original pain was worse. At least I can walk now, whereas I was barely able to before t he surgery. Hopefully I am all done with back surgery! And just for the record, my recovery time was 6-8 weeks.

Thanks for that bass, I am going to see my doctor this week to consider the second surgery for the reasons you mentioned. I actually had no pain whatever after the first surgery! I had an amazing doctor

Hello ~ I hesitate to add my two cents worth, but I will anyway.

I am a retired MRI tech and have seen many failed back surgeries in my 25+ years of work so I am hesitant about back surgery. My HwP has recently developed sciatic pain which interferes with his bike riding. I have started having him do some stretches from a book that I have and have used for myself when my back pain has flared up so bad that I could barely walk. The name of the book is "Pain Free, A Revolutionary Method For Stopping Pain" by Pete Egscue. My HwP only started these 2 days ago after seeing his neurologist so we don't know the outcome yet. However, when I was working I had two patients that had PT that actually reversed their herniated disk!!! That has given me hope that we can reverse my HwP's disk problem.

Good luck ~

Im actually a radiology tech too. In fact, I worked in a spine surgery specialists office for many years. I also worked as an interventional tech and assisted numerous neurosurgeons with spine surgeries of all kinds for years after that. And I saw a many failed back surgeries and failed back syndrome cases as well. This is exactly why I hesitated for 7 years until I just couldn't take it anymore. Then I was so pleased with the results that I wanted to kick myself for waiting so long! Im sure you've seen as many success stories as disasters. Everyone is afraid of being a disaster case, naturally. Having a good doctor and being a good, compliant patient are the best chances of success. And luck!
