What an interesting article, amazing what it is good for.
Hi Kia! Yes, it's an amazing powder I use it daily for all cleaning and washing purposes. I also made a saline solution for my husband, using sea salt, baking soda and a drop of eucalyptus (or peppermint).
How much should you add to a glass of water?
The article says 1/2 teaspoon to four ounces of water no more than 7 times in a 24 hour period.
How many times a day do you think you would have to drink it to get the benefit. I often think there is some kind of autoimmune component to PD. My family has many autoimmune issues. Very interesting , thanks!
I thought I would try it before going to bed.
1/2 tsp in water before bed, sounds good. I wonder if once during the day would be helpful too??
I have taken it a half hour after meals to neutralize excess stomach acid. By a half hour after a meal, the hydrochloric acid should be about done doing its contribution to the digestion process and neutralizing what is left will control heartburn for me on those rare occasions when I have gotten it. According to the article, this should allow increased acid production for better digestion of the next meal.
Many people with chronic acid indigestion are actually producing too little acid for the main part of the meal and if sodium bicarbonate does what they say in the article, this procedure should likely eliminate the problem with regular use.

Is it a good remedy for GERD Art? Better than TUMS? Thanks!
For me it is.
Thanks Art, my son has GERD.
ConnieD,
Doctors provide proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to block or reduce acid production, but for most people over 40 years of age, the problem is often too little hydrochloric acid available on demand when needed during the digestion process. The end result is that the body makes too little effort to produce "enough acid", but instead continues to produce a small amount of acid beyond the point of use for digestion and this results in acid indigestion. I wrote a reply post about this which goes into more detail, here :

Here is an older Dr. Mercola article which discusses this problem :

Thank you Art very informative articles, it looks like taking PPIs long term isn’t wise!
My son is only 24 I will talk to him about trying your method!! Thanks for the advice! Interesting that it’s a lack of stomach acid instead of what I always assumed was too much. Thank you, Connie😊
I don't know if it is the same for much younger people like your son. I do know that our production of hydrochloric acid declines as we age and it is a common problem for seniors. When I was that young, I would use just baking soda for the very rare occasions when I needed to and it by itself managed the problem, but there were very few needs to do so back in my 20's! Yes, there are plenty of reasons to avoid PPIs like the sometimes reported neuropathy by some users!

Thanks Art, appreciate your help!
I didn't see it mentioned in the article, I may have missed it, but you should not take this drink for two hours before meals or for at least a half hour after eating as it will neutralize hydrochloric acid that is needed at full strength for proper digestion. Drinking before or during eating may create problems.
Another benefit that some users find is that taking it prior to bed time helps some people get to sleep and stay asleep.

Did you happen to see that following passage in the article?
The featured study at MCG was performed first on rats, then on humans, involving the consumption of water with baking soda for two weeks. What the researchers found was a “triggered” response in their stomachs to manufacture the acid needed to help them digest their next meal.
I thought this was really interesting I had no idea. The baking soda is the safest and cheapest way to go if you are experiencing any problems Mary
Thanks for that info, I’m going to give it a try.😊
Good article, however one sentence puzzled me - "But there’s more to the acidic environment that baking soda creates for improved health than an old wives’ tale." I think "acidic" should be written as "alkaline", however the rest of the paragraph is true as I have successfully used baking soda for UTI in the past.
faridaro,
That statement confused me also, but based on other information in the article, I think it is correct as written. In the article they mention that consumption of the sodium bicarbonate drink will result in an increased production of hydrochloric acid for the next meal. This is kind of the opposite response often described for apple cider vinegar(ACV) where although it is acidic, it ultimately has an alkalinizing effect in humans.
I take this to mean that the consumption of the drink will have an alkalinizing effect initially that is followed by an increase in hydrochloric acid production in time for your next meal. If that is correct, it may mean that this could potentially be an effective treatment for GERD and similar gastro disturbances! I guess to say that a little differently, sodium bicarbonate drink may tend to have a normalizing effect on certain aspects of digestive function?

In regard to increasing production of hydrochloric acid, this statement would make sense, the only problem is it was related to UTI and the next sentence was "One study notes that because it helps raise your pH, it can ease urinary tract infections, or UTIs." So, creating "acidic environment" in one sentence and raising PH in the following was puzzling. However, I can attest to baking soda raising PH as I was testing urine with PH strips when taking it.
Yes, it is confusing, but I think they are referring to different areas of the body. Proponents of alkalinizing frequently say that it is good for raising ph while opponents frequently mention that alkalinizing will not alter blood ph because it is very tightly regulated by the body, however alkalinizing can alter urine, mouth and certain soft tissue ph levels which helps to explain why it will help with certain types of UTI's, but apparently when it comes to stomach acid production, sodium bicarbonate can increase hydrochloric acid production, lowering the ph level, at least temporarily by the next meal. I suspect this is part of what our natural bicarbonate stores do on an as needed basis, so the addition of baking soda seems likely to help preserve those bicarbonate stores in the long run as an added quality.

Yep it is all about PH. Our body does not like anything acidic. Too much acid from some fruits and other foods can result in Rashes, itch, hives and boils. A bath of tepid water with a package of baking soda is a great relief of the swelling and itch. Putting a paste on the affected area also works and a nice glass of cold water and baking soda helps with stomach heart burn.
My Grandmother told us that 60 years ago. The news that it continues to produce benefits in other parts of the body is not surprising. Knowing what the PH level of each type of food and drink is and the PH level that our body is happy is worth while knowledge. (The PH level can be too high and too low )
Thank you for this information

PS so there is no confusion
Baking Soda = Calcium Carbonate = CaCO3
and is the main component of : Limestone, Marble, Pearls, Sea Shells, and all Bones and is used as an antacid for stomach upset and a supplement to treat and prevent osteoporosis and an aggressive tooth paste for cleaning teeth. (note the PH scale is not linear. )
Also baking soda is used in a cancer protocol. There's lots of information on Google, Italian doctor has written about it.
