Anybody Taking MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)?

It's been 2 months since I wrote about Methylsulfonylmethane so I am raising the topic again. I have finally worked it into my stack every day (1/4 teaspoon full in 5 ounces of water). It just looks like it supports all the things PwP would be looking to improve (I have a high school degree):

2.1. Anti-Inflammation

2.2. Antioxidant/Free-Radical Scavenging

2.3. Immune Modulation

3.5. Reduce Oxidative Stress

In vitro studies suggest that MSM does not chemically neutralize ROS in stimulated neutrophils but instead suppresses mitochondrial generation of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hypochlorous acid [97]. Additionally, MSM is able to restore the reduced glutathione (GSH)/oxidized glutathione (GSSG) ratio to normal levels, decrease NO production, and reduce neuronal ROS production following HIV-1 Tat exposure [109]. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/283...

Methylsulfonylmethane is effective against gastric mucosal injury pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/286...

In db/db mice, a marked impairment in glucose and lipid metabolic profiles is notably ameliorated when MSM is supplemented. These data suggest that MSM has beneficial effects on multiple metabolic dysfunctions, including hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation. Thus, MSM could be the therapeutic option for the treatment of obesity-related metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and fatty liver diseases. sciencedirect.com/science/a...

MSM’s sulfur also plays an important role in the production of glutathione, considered to be a master antioxidant and an important agent for detoxification ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Finally, I am going to link to an article parkie13 linked to 3 years ago: Rotten eggs, Rotorua and Parkinson’s disease scienceofparkinsons.com/201... it's not actually about MSM but is about hydrogen sulfide, but it is still sulfur and links to lots of studies.

I've used it for years, but I don't generally recommend it to others any more because of some potential side effects not reported in studies, but rather, anecdotally.

How much are you taking Art?

I don't use it orally any more, I apply it topically as a spray. When I used it orally, I went about 15 to 20 grams per day in OJ, but not everybody can tolerate it.

Wow! That is a lot!

It's very bitter and sharp, even in OJ!

I found that grapefruit juice masked the flavour of MSM

better than anything else

It was a lot as it was a self experiment where I was trying to find my tolerance limit, but usual recommended dosing is much much lower at 1 to 6 grams /day. I didn't find a problem for me at that dose, but I would never go that high again or recommend MSM. I was a lot younger then.

People who are experiencing ear problems, sinus problems should not be afraid to try it in a smaller dosage. It is simply amazing, but do not take it before going to bed or you might be awake. I have not taken this in a while, I really don't know why, I guess there's only so much that you can take in a day. Mary

Hi parkie13Was searching about MSM as I’ve just bought some to use

Reason being lots of sinus headache and neck problems

Seen your reply there and I am wondering if you have had ear/sinus problems and have you used MSM?

Thank you and take care

Yes I have used it for quite a while way back before I h a d Parkinson's. For many years I was plagued with a stuffed up nose, just like I had a clothespin on my nose. It was pretty bad. At that time I used quite a bit, teaspoon t o two dissolved in water. I really don't think that you have to go with that amount. I think a smaller amount will do just fine, a large capsule. Since that time I have never had it that bad. Thanks for asking. Mary

So glad you asked this question. I tried the powder and unfortunately it made the tremors worse.

Maybe take less? My tremors are getting worse but I have not taken it recently.
