Covid vaccine

I am not the PWP but my husband is. We live in Canada and they are offering the AstraZeneca vaccine. I have rheumatoid arthritis. Any thoughts on this? Should I be wary?

Maybe go on the HU arthritis forum and see what they're saying.

Peg,

Another PwP asked the question. Here is the link,

I have friends with rheumatoid arthritis in the UK who have had the AZ vaccine and are fine. They like were pleased to have been offered the vaccine as they were very concerned about getting COVID given their immune systems are already compromised, and with that their ability to fight the virus. With 24 million people vaccinated here, we are seeing transmission rates drop dramatically, and this is being mirrored by statistics emerging from Israel which has had a vigorous vaccination programme.

I just saw this article dated yesterday that looks like it may be important if correct :

qz.com/1984717/what-are-ast...

What caught my attention aside from the blood clot mentioned as the main point of the article was the 53 falls on their list of reported side effects, which would be of concern for PwP. The 89 reports of flatulence might be a bit off putting. 402 reports of increased thirst, but no mention of reported effects on arthritis.

As the only person on this forum WITH ACTUAL, REAL EXPERTISE in CTs and who actually knows something about the AZ trial and subsequent blood clot problems, I would decline it under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

I am not pro or anti vaccine, like some on this forum obviously are, nor am I a fantasy scientist like many. I know for a fact this vaccine and its development have been riddled with problems from early on at Oxford, just like J&J's vaccine.

At least 24 countries have stopped/halted using this vaccine for a reason. In too many cases they have found specific antibodies colliding against blood platelets that can cause blood clot life threatening reactions.

Cytokine storms are not unique to viruses, nor as an antecedent to Parkinsons, but for some reason this AZ vaccine creates a tsunami tidal wave in certain people.

I hypothesize the data will eventually show a high correlation of clotting and deaths with PWP, ALZ, MS, etc. types because they already are afflicted with dysfunctional cytokines. It is a serious reaction that may not kill, but can easily exacerbate one's neurodegeneration........without clotting being identified!

This problem is too serious for any PWP to proceed with this vaccine, particularly those beyond 5 years progression from diagnosis, or who have had any type of DBS or FUS/PTT.

Ema has declared it safe and most countries are restarting their use of this vaccine.

PJ,

Actually read the EMA study instead of regurgitating the headline "blurb".

The EMA reviewed reports of 7 cases of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and 18 cases of CVS. 25 cases total. A laughable, inadequate sample, but this is all about British science and whether it is any good, British national politics and big money.

The infamously famous WHO blessed it (without substantiating their perspective).

The UK's MHRA also blessed the vaccine even though their study of a total of 5 cases is"ongoing". Going where exactly? Nobody knows.

As their "serious" investigation continues, the MHRA urged people who experience a headache lasting longer than 4 days after vaccination or those with bruising beyond the vaccination site to seek medical attention. Why the warning? Wonder why if it is so safe Andy Pollard didn't publicly refute MHRA's warning? Does he know something we don't? A "go along, get along" guy.

Political checkers game gambling with peoples' lives. Nothing new.

Lol.. thanks for your usual condensending response. I did read the ema response article. I'm based in Ireland so I'll well versed in European politics. I was just pointing out data that you clearly didn't know in your original response.

Not meant to be condescending. Just Asperger's I suspect. Both of my neighbours have had strong reactions to it, one only had it the day before yesterday. His wife has recovered. Reactions were flu like. My wife is going ahead tomorrow. I will give it a miss, but then am only 50.

as a follow on regarding AZ's vaccine: it failed vs. B.1.351 variant

Two doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine were ineffective against mild-to-moderate infections with the B.1.351 variant first identified in South Africa, according to a phase 1b-2 clinical trial published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The safety and the efficacy of the AstraZeneca ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine in HIV-negative adults was considered a failure at 10.4% efficacy. This efficacy rating (and lack of blood clotting) was observed from 750 participants of a very young age group (mean age =30!).

The totally unrealistic sampling leads me to wonder if the AZ blood clotting was primarily a function of age.

Don't know.

I point out that this is the first time I've heard Sharon say 'don't know'.

😀

However IMO they know it!

Thanks Gio, but I already explained the trial results.

No one knows why the AEs were so low in this trial. As I pointed out, I suspect it was due to the median age (30) resulting in low levels of cytokines. (think average age of PWP in comparison)

Just a highly educated guess.

@pegcity, get the vaccine. Doesn't matter which one. They are all equally safe, whatever the medical community has defined as a standard. Any chatter about any vaccine being unreliable is just people with agendas trying to down one company or the other. Or pure, desperate politics.

I have diabetes and Parkinson's and they are both complicated diseases. I just got my first dose vaccine today (Pfizer) and it feels like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulder.

Sounds like you and your husband each have Parkinson's and Arthritis. You are in fact in a better place than I am. I am not a doctor but I would not be too worried. Talk to your doctor about it and make sure you are doing the right thing by following their advice. My care team unequivocally told me to get vaccinated ASAP. Told me to get whatever I could get hold of. Brand name doesn't matter. I was told that if I contracted the virus, my life was likely to be way more miserable than what I have right now with Parkinson's and diabetes.

Hope that helps.

Tiny chance of side effects vs proven much more common awful effects of covid including death. Know which one I'll choose.

I read that the incidence of blood clots following the AZ vaccine was actually less than the normal background rate in the general population.

pdpatient profile image
pdpatient in reply toBuckholt

@buckholt, yes you are right! I also read that India has injected 35 million Astrazeneca vaccine with no problems of clotting.

In fact, my brother got it in the UK and has had no issues.

SO you "read" a pharma press release - of course it says that - billions are at risk for A.Z.

@ryzlot, I read a news update from the BBC. See the latest news on the vaccine roll-out in various countries at the BBC website and here is the one for India. Note that India has two vaccines - covaxin and covishield (Astrazenica).

The only problem is that vaccination appears to be a super spreader event . See Imran khan for instance.

Yes it's unfortunate that it seems he went maskless once too often and contracted covid , the vaccine does not have a dose of covid in it so it couldn't have been that. Just bad timing .

18 countries have suspended or banned use of this treatment - and the USA is sending millions of doses to Canada and Mexico (Dumping) - Why would you consider taking this product?

JR

Parkinsonjisung profile image
Parkinsonjisung in reply toryzlot

Cause its outdated news and most countries are now starting their vaccine rollout again following a review by the ema that there was no correlation between the blood clots and the vaccine. Vaccines save life's.

ryzlot profile image
ryzlot in reply toParkinsonjisung

Where exactly do you get the data on this "vax-een" saving lives. It is a virtually untested EXPERIMENTAL gene therapy sold by a company that has requested and given total immunity from ANY liability. That get-out-of-jail-free card is the only IMMUNITY offered by this dangerous unproven product

JR

Parkinsonjisung profile image
Parkinsonjisung in reply toryzlot

The azetrazenca vaccine is not gene therapy.

ryzlot profile image
ryzlot in reply toParkinsonjisung

It is a DNA/RNA modifier - Gene Therapy. Why was AZ given COMPLETE IMMUNITY from all liability?

For your info...Sweden announced earlier today that they have also halted the use of the experimental AstraZeneca vaccine as have several other European countries because of it s connection with blood clotting issues.
