Very, very little "clinical" supporting evidence that Mannitol is beneficial for PD patients.

******VERY (extremely) poorly absorbed!******

and coffee does NOT take it across the BBB.

There is a lot of chatter saying that mannitol can DISRUPT the blood brain barrier.

Maybe this is good news in terms of getting it into the brain.

Maybe it is bad news in terms of allowing other stuff into the brain?

Interesting "cell" study, but obviously it does not address the issues of absorption of Mannitol in the human body and its "relative" inability to cross the human BBB.

However, the authors suggest that ....

..."One of the main obstacles in drug development is the inability of most drugs to pass across the BBB into the central nervous system (CNS). As reported previously (6), Mannitol, a nonmetabolized FDA-approved osmotic diuretic mediator, can also be

used to open the BBB by producing osmotic shrinkage of the

endothelial cells and mechanical separation of the tight junctions that form the BBB. Therefore, it can be used to deliver various drugs directly to the brain..." citing Butler's study as well as Malek's(6).

Malke (et al) suggest that Mannitol in "clinical concentrations" induces cell death...

in their "bovine" study. Hmm. Bovine study. In understandable English "osmotic diuretic" means by IV.

Can we take their conclusion to the bank? Doubtful unless you plan on in-taking Mannitol by IV on a routine basis.

IOW, oral absorption of Mannitol is so low that even if it can pass the BBB, very little actually passes.

Any further questions?

I took 1 tsp of mannitol for the first time yesterday, and by the evening was tooting like a trumpet!

I'm following park_bear's advice and I've ordered a bottle of Alpha Galactosidase to try and stop the farts.

in reply toElliotGreen

The Walmart house brand is the best price for alpha galactosidase (Beano). The Walmart pills are stronger than Beano pills on a per pill basis and the box is much cheaper. Another thing you can try is dissolving the mannitol in a bottle of water and sip throughout thge day to create a "slow release" which should prevent high concentrations all at once which may help to alleviate some of the gas. the alpha galactosidase is included in the more expensive mannitol product Syncolein, for the sole purpose of gas reduction.

Here is Beano:

Thanks very much Art.

I bought 2 kg of mannitol, so that's what I'm to be using.

I live in Scotland, so Walmart brands may not be readily available to me.

I have ordered "Enzymedica Bean Assist Dietary Supplement Capsules, 30-Count"

amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00...

Following information from your links, it doesn't look like I got a great deal. The instructions say take one tablet, but they only have 300 GaIU, just as much enzyme as one Beano tablet, which is half a dose.

The bulk powder suppliers may have AG at better pricing, but it is a relatively new product for them and some do not carry it yet or are still expensive.
