Sinemet, Mucuna Pruriens & positive experience with Ashwaghanda Root: Is the dosage of MP causing the problems: leg freezing etc.

I was diagnosed with Parkinsons age 63 1.5 yrs ago Rx Sinemex (carb/levo 25-100mg. 4 tabs a day). At first all was well; then a few months ago I started to have issues, especially deep fatigue 24/7 that was exhausting. I was so tired! Other problems as well.

So I decided to try going with Mucuna Pruriens (Swanson 200 capsules 350 mg) as I'd heard so many good things about it. Well, it was awful! My foot started to freeze to the floor so I couldn't move forward or turn-I couldn't take even one step; I needed help getting dressed, on & off toilet, forget shopping; stiff walking; tremors; the works.

My husband and I had read about ashwaghanda root and added it to our supplement list--about an hour after taking one capsule it was heaven! All of a sudden I could walk around downstairs BETTER than I had as a young child. NO leg freezing, needed no help using toilet, dressing. It was a MIRACLE. And then my 30 minutes in heaven were up. I decided to take a shower to celebrate the success of the ashwaghanda root and when I got out it was gone. Gone. I was back in frozen foot, fatigue, tremors land! I have tried adding it back to our daily supplement list and it hasn't changed, the frozen foot and arms are still there.

I can't live with the mucuna pruriens with the dosage etc. I tried to use (350mg capsule 2 a day) so it looks like I'll have to go back to the Sinemet, which is exactly what I don't want to do for all the reasons we discuss here.

My husband thinks we were not using enough mucuna pruriens to make a difference. Neither of us can figure out why the ashwaghanda root worked so so well for only 30 minutes...

Any ideas my friends? How do I move on from Sinemet to mucuna pruriens? And is that as good an idea as people say? My husband wants us to consider healing parkinsons with pro and pre biotics.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and kindnes.

Your symptoms could be from overdose but i haven't a clue about dosage of Mucuna. As far as I know it is unregulated so you have to trust your source, buyer beware. It is another form of levadopa and though it may have some benefits over the manufactured medicines it also will have side effects as you are finding.

Hi Hikoi...I have read your posts and feel you have a good handle on the disease. Can you tell me what supplements and medications you are currently taking?

Annie,

Thankyou.

I have spent some part of nearly every day for the 10 years I have had PD reading about it, both personal experiences and research. The more I have become involved the more I find myself conventional in my treatment with alternatives having a place on the periphery for quality of life issues.

I have had ups and downs with control of my symptoms over the years but what I take now is working really well. I do still have off times but Im mostly OK. The biggest challenge more recently is feeling tired. I doubt that my regime will be any help to anyone else but i have included it. It can take the adding or moving times of just one pill that can make a huge difference I have found.

This regime is working for me and I get 5 hours on time between doses (7am, 12md, 5pm) now which is good. I am not taking any supplements. As i have been taking meds a long time now I have been thinking of seeing an integrative physician for supplement advice, but its very expensive and I havent got around to it .

Daily I take:

Sinemet long acting 200/50 x3

Pramipexol 0.25 x 4 day

Tolcopone 100mg x 2 day

Amantadine 100mg x 2 day

Madopar dispersable 50/12.5 at 7am and occasional extra during the day if necessary.

Norpress 20mg when I go to bed.

I have very mild dyskinesia for some part of the day, mostly twitches. Most of the day I dont appear to have PD. Best wishes to you, hope you find what works for you.

Thank you for your prompt answer. I was diagnosed 6 years ago.. and reside in Albert,Canada. I am a Reg. Nurse of 32 years. I struggle with wearing off and neuropathic pain and anxiety. Finally I was admitted to hospital to sort out symptoms under my psychiatrist who seemed to be the only doctor interested enough to help I see my neurologist on Friday.

She has never discussed long acting through the daytime .

Look into trying Zandopa because it was tested on PwP:

Also, you could try ashwaghanda with mucuna pruriens because the 2 herbs have synergy:
