Bredesen Protocol

I've just read about this, not on HU but elsewhere and thought I'd bring it back and share with the community. Having got here I see that Parkie13 has beaten me to it! But I wanted to post again and endorse the message as I think that it's very important. If you're a PWP please go and read about this protocol. It's targeted at Alzheimer's but I sense that it would do us all a lot of good too. Unfortunately it would appear that a Ketogenic Diet is indeed the way to go (mild ketosis at least) although there are other aspects to the protocol. I say unfortunately as I was on the Keto Diet for about 6 weeks when I was first diagnosed and a) didn't think it worked and b) found it a drag not being able to eat sweet things and missed fruit. But I suspect that I wasn't on it long enough. But essentially, many people who have Alzheimers are reversing their symptoms with this diet based programme. What was very interesting is that Bredesen seems to have concluded that the amyloid plaque isn't the culprit but is produced by the body to attempt to fight inflammation. Researchers in the past have wrongly identified this plaque as being the cause when it isn't. Bit like people arriving after a forest fire and concluding that the ash caused the damage? Interesting stuff. Bredesen also recommends the use of Vielight (see my recent post on led-light therapy).

I am currently reading The End Of Alzheimer's by Dr. Dale Bredesen. This book, though it's about Alzheimer's, I believe this protocal will definitely translate to Parkinson's. This is very relevant information to anyone with a neurodegenerative illness. I'm combining this treatment protocal outlined by Bredesen with Dr. Gundry's plant paradox diet plan.

I looked through Gudry's book but turned away from the menus. What is a sample meal for you?

Sweet potato, brussell sprouts, olives, anchovies, carrots .

Thank you for sharing that information. My husband has been using a ketosis protocol for a few years now. I've just uploaded a description of his diet onto my profile. So you click on my photo, and the information is there. Of course, there are plenty of ways to attain ketosis with your diet - this is just the way that he does it.

It's so good to learn about other people's experience with different diets. I also believe that our bodies have great capacity to heal if we provide the right "fuel". Thank you for sharing your menus and recipes, I'll definitely try some of them although might need to come up with some substitutes because my food test has shown sensitivity to dairy, almonds, sunflower seeds and eggs (although I didn't notice eggs in your recipes). Interestingly enough my other 2 family members turned out also to be sensitive to almonds and eggs. Not sure how accurate those tests are, but it might be good to be tested before going on a restricted diet in order to avoid extra burden on immune system.

Thanks for the diet info - I think Coconut oil is definitely helpful. Have you also tried Mannitol? I think those who benefit from ketosis may also benefit from Mannitol

Thank you for suggesting Mannitol. We'll look into that.

Jenette. Does your husband feel better on it? I tried it 6 weeks and felt no shift in symptoms but I wonder if I gave it long enough?

He felt the lift in brain fog, slight improvement in muscle stiffness, and improvement in bowel regularity within 2 weeks. For him, those improvements have been very important. Also, the hope that the disease progression may be slowed makes him feel better.

I also think that Keto is the best way to eat. I feel better when I am on it. No bloating or acid reflux, weight loss, more energy, no leg edema, etc. It is hard to stay on completely, especially around the holidays, and there seems to be one of those every month or so.

I completely understand what you mean about the holidays! I believe that as long as we do the right thing 95% of the time, it will be fine.
