Helicobacter pylori (HP) is a common infection of the gastrointestinal system that is usually related to peptic ulcers. Usually HP is contracted in the first years of life and tends to persist unless treated. Studies have found the prevalence of HP infection to be high in PD patient. Conclusion of this 2016 NIH study is that all PD patients may wish to consider asking their primary care doctor (or GI specialist) to check a C-urea breath test for the possible presence of H. Pylori infection. Eradicating HP from patients with Parkinson's disease by applying antibiotic treatment will decrease their motor fluctuations / diminish downtime.
