I don't know the name of the drug but I used my internet skills and found the following Japanese herb that was found to treat gastroparesis:

Dietary herb extract rikkunshi-to ameliorates gastroparesis in Parkinson's disease: a pilot study.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/244...

Thanks once again. You saved me from searching for more stuff. I've been overwhelmed lately with all I've found and learned. Be well. Judy

Do you know if this is available as a supplement in general?

It's available on line in the UK from here

thefooddoctor.com/Article-A... I've been looking for something to help with gastroparesis for years and, having read the very helpful paper posted by Silvertrov, I'm sending for some. I'll post again if it has a beneficial effect

What is the name or do you have to mix the herbs yourself? Thank you. Judy

Might be worth looking at this

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl... before deciding whether to try it.

Have just looked at the food doctor site and am mystified. In the middle of last night I thought I had found they sold it. I'll keep checking and try to find it somewhere in the UK and post when I do

I will also research. Thanks for your help. It is a widespread problem for us as pdp. It almost did me and my family in. Be well Judy.

Here is a link to purchasing rikkunshi-to:

google.com/webhp?sourceid=c...

The 43 dollar + investment is for 2 weeks.

There are other options I am looking into.

Thank you rich but is this the drug given to treat pd like we use cdld here? I'm getting confused about what it is I'm looking for lol. Thanks judy

I cannot answer your question because I would need to see the PD trial to see what drug was used. So I did a search and found this:

Nizatidine ameliorates gastroparesis in Parkinson's disease: a pilot study.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/243...

Is this the name of the drug?

PS. a prescription is required to purchase this drug.

I don't believe that's it. There was nothing mentioned in the study about gastroparesis or digestive issues. It was a trial to see if it was an alternative or an agonist to cdld. We don't know if I was on actual Meds or placebo. At the time he mentioned caffeine and did I drink coffee. I have never drank coffee or even caffeinated tea or soda. Maybe since it's now in use the digestive help has been found to be a plus. Thanks judy

My pleasure. The study said 300 mg per day and that costs about 40 $ a month with a prescription. I guess it is time to see your doctor.

I think I found it. It's a2a adenosine blocker? So is that inosine? It's on the pd.org web in June 2013 which is about the right timeframe I did the trial. It's considered an agonist for dopamine. What do you think? Thanks Judy.

I am not sure how it happened but when I checked the (above) link to Nizatidine I was redirected to a page with antacids....not what I intended. I posted the proper link above and will post it here too:

healthwarehouse.com/nizatid...

As for inosine it is a supplement used by athletes who what want lean body weight, muscle growth and endurance.

PEAK ATP also is an athletic supplement and it too raises uric acid levels. Here is a weightlifting study with PEAK ATP:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

I experimented with PEAK ATP and it gave me energy - too much energy, and think it may have therapeutic value in PD only at low doses.

Inosine was tested (funded by the MJF Foundation grant) and it was found to slow the rate of PD progression. Officially it passed the 'nonfutility' qualification. Most recent MJF/inosine info:

michaeljfox.org/foundation/...

Inosine raises the uric acid levels in the body and it is a powerful antioxidant. At Harvard, in a study of men, men in the highest quartile (highest uric acid concentration) had a 55% reduced risk of PD. And in PD patients those people who have the highest uric acid levels have a mild case of PD. Men with the lowest levels of uric acid levels had severe PD. The UA/PD relationship has been more closely to affect men than women.

Dr. Marc Weisskopf, of Harvard, studied the UA/PD relationship. I know this because I used to be a weightlifter (as a young man) and have studied weightlifting supplements extensively. The Harvard link:

aje.oxfordjournals.org/cont...

The 'nonfutility' trial:

archneur.jamanetwork.com/ar...

Marc Weisskopf audio interview:

abc.net.au/radionational/pr...

I missed the 'I don't think that is it' (regarding Nizatidine) from the above post....a bit too busy recently - family turmoil and such, and am not sure about the use of inosine for gastroparesis. But if you responded positively to caffeine, inosine may help gastroparesis too. Both caffeine and uric acid, the by product of inosine, are categorized as purines and I found an article called:

"Potential for Developing Purinergic Drugs for Gastrointestinal Diseases"

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

I have not had time to read the article but I am sure uric acid is mentioned.

That's it thank you. Sounds like hope for gastroparesis. I sure hope so. Beyond that it is definitely hope for pd patients that suffer all kinds of gi tract problems. I'll post you if and when I give it a try. I want to see the gi dr first to make sure my gut is healing. I have always been very caffeine sensitive like everything else I've put in my gut lol. Thanks again be well and may we all have peace in our lives. Judy.

PS. In retrospect, if money were not an issue in choosing a herbal/drug therapy for gastroparesis it would be rikkunshi-to rather than nizatidine and here is why (rikkunshi-to is twice the price).

Rikkunshito, a ghrelin potentiator, ameliorates anorexia–cachexia syndrome

"The use of a potentiator of ghrelin signaling, such as rikkunshito, may represent a novel approach for the treatment of anorexia–cachexia syndrome."

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Long-term survival of Parkinson's disease: a population-based study.

"Among causes of death, pneumonia and cachexia were significantly more frequent among PD patients than among individuals free of neurological diseases."

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/160...
