Covid vaccine

Has anyone received the Covid vaccine? I have my vaccination scheduled this week and worried about having IBD. I’m newly diagnosed and haven’t started meds yet. I’m wondering how our immune systems will react to the vaccine.

Hi, I belong to another health board & people with IBD's are not any higher risk. Many have received the vaccine while on medication including biologics. I hope this helps your stress level.

Thank you! There’s been so much conflicting info and I know IBD patients weren’t in trials. This makes me feel at ease.

Strangely enough it was my IBD team who contacted me telling me to shield and determined that I am clinically extremely vulnerable.

No. My IBD team wrote to me last year advising me to shield.

Oh wow. You’re the first person I’ve heard of with IBD that was advised in not getting the vaccine. I guess everyone’s medical situation is different. My IBD is considered mild from what my doc told me. However, I still question whether or not I should get it.

I think you have misunderstood. I never said I'd been told not to have the vaccine - I shall be having my first jab this coming Saturday. I was merely pointing out that it's more than likely that my IBD (UC) that has made me one of many who are clinically extremely vulnerable since it was the IBD team who advised me to shield.

You'll receive a booklet from the NHS (assuming you're in the UK) which says

"...{the vaccines] are safe for people with disorders of the immune system."

I'm sorry if I caused any confusion. So go ahead and have your jab.

Ahhh I see. I’ve been a big confused mess lately! So much info to process. I’m in the U.S. but I’m sure this info is still helpful. Overall, the benefits seem to outweigh the risks. I’m getting mine Saturday as well. Good luck!!

My brother has had his last Sunday but for a bit of a sore arm he says no symptoms as a result. He's a transplant patient, who also has an IBD. xxx

I'm worried also, I have colitis and compromised immune system and also have allergies. I did read at the beginning of the rollout that some medical staff reacted badly to their first dose, so wasn't very reassuring. I'm going to take advice from my doctor as there are different vaccines being rolled out also.I'm sure as more people receive the vaccine there will be more information available. Yeah, I’ve heard of a lot of people with bad reactions. However, that’s a good thing because it means the immune system is working as it should. From the people I’ve known to get the Moderna...it seems like the second dose is what gets you. Flu like symptoms. I’m so Nervous. I’ve only had the flu once in my life. I’d rather get these temporary symptoms that get a bad case of covid though 👍🏻.

Had my vaccine last week (Pfizer one, 1st dose). Currently on biologics for my IBD - had no issues with the vaccine.

Hi, I had my 1st vaccine in December 2nd booked end of February. My Gastroenterologist advised it was safe for me to have it. I have a compromised immune system and have been sheilding most of pandemic due to having crohns and taking azathioprine for past 20 years. Mild reaction headache, no energy, aching joints, very sore injection site. Glad I had it as partner and Son have to go to work so if they passed the virus to me hopefully I would have some protection. Little disappointed as even though I will have both vaccines the government health advisors can't say it will be safe to end sheilding.

Thank you for sharing. This is reassuring as my GI doc didn’t reassure me of much. I’m happy to hear your side effects were minimal. I just got mine. So far just tired and cheeks flushed. However, the tired feeling may be from the stress I’ve had about this. I was officially diagnosed with proctitis and it’s considered mild. No meds yet. I wish you luck !
