Flexible Siginomtry - what can I or can’t eat a couple of days before procedure.

I’m feeling a little anxious as I’m not sure what foods I should avoid before procedure. When do I stop pigging out (going to be tricky as I love food)

Also should I have gas and air 😜

Do you mean a flexi sigmoidoscopy? You should have instructions for prep.

I had one recently and had no restrictions on food, I was sent an enema to use at home 2 hours before procedure. For me it was extremely painful and gas and air did absolutely nothing. I’ve had many colonoscopies which were far less painful !

Good luck

Have you been given instructions and some 'clear out' meds such as Moviprep to drink? Usually you are told to have a low-fibre diet for 2-3 days before the appointment, so that's bland, white bread/rice/chicken and few fruit/veg. I always have gas and air and find it enough to keep me comfortable. Hope it goes well!

I usually get a three page leaflet!! Open the package if you haven't already and see if there are any instructions inside. Otherwise, just do low fibre. Makes the experience somewhat easier.

I think you mean a flexible sigmoidoscopy which I a thin camera inserted through the anus to check the lower part of the colon, a low fibre diet is usually the preparation from 48 hours before then the prep drink to clear the bowel the day before then clear fluids only from midnight before. I would definitely ask for the sedation it can be painful, google low fibre diet to see what you can and can’t have. Oh and if having the sedation you’ll need someone to take you has your not allowed to drive for 24 hours after. Good luck.

Hi I am due to have one next week on Friday I'm having no sedation or no gas and air have been advised it is just uncomfortable but not painful is like period pain I was told. I'm also nervous 😕 my pack came with the bowel prep and a leaflet of foods allowed. Maybe contact them to send you some more info and good luck hope all goes well 🙂

HiNice to meet you

.my husband's having same test

No you don't avoid any food but you do fast six hours before procedure.

There's a option for sedation injection and or gas and air

My husband has chrons but they found lump rear end he hence this test instead of colonoscopy.

He's going 2 hours early for nurse to do enema

All best hope gives answers

Hi

You doing it wrong there's no need to eat less , because it's only for opening area bowels.

Not a colonoscopy where u change diet

U just fast six hours before procedure then enema two hours before he has his tomorrow

Hi my husband sigmoidoscopy went well

Don't understand your diet change here London they don't do that.

Just a enema two hours before procedure

He slept they found no lumps.

His enema came out to quick,so they couldn't view both sides silly lot never told him if have again the nurse can do it there

HiGlad your husbands all went well 👍

Some people can't be given a enema if colitis is suspected or if having any bloody diarrhea it is not advised to have unfortunately 😕 I personally would have preferred to have had that as it is less of a prep but they have given me Picolax and a special diet to follow as they suspect UC 😔

I will update for anyone who might be going through any similar issues and well done to your husband bet his glad it is all done 👍🙂🤗

I have had 3 colonoscopies now and definitely the restricted diet is the worse bit. I found having a consume it clear broth with poached chicken and white rice the most paletable and having clear jellys as a sweet treat. A pack of soft wipes and some vaseline helps when the start of 6-10 poos start coming! Good luck.

Thank you Daisy - yes I’ve been eating chicken and white rice.

Although I’m craving chocolate and a curry 🤣🤣

By flexible sig is tomorrow lunchtime 🫣

I gotta have an enema at home 2 hours before I’m dreading the aftermath 🤣🤣

soul22 profile image
soul22 in reply toBucket13

My husband had that he has chrons and colitis but no diet prep

Unfortunately enema came out to quick so they didn't get view everything

Bucket13 profile image
Bucket13 in reply tosoul22

That’s what I’m worried about.

I think I will do the enema at home. My appointment is 2:30. Should I do it 2 hours before?

Bucket13 profile image

now I’m wondering if to have enema at home or hospital give it before? It’s tomorrow 🫣😧🤣😳

thank you so much Sooty. Yes it all went really well. I felt really lightheaded earlier as not eaten much the last couple of days the enema at home was embarrassing but the actual flexible sigmoidoscopy went really well. I wasn’t sedated no gas / air either only slight discomfort and wind. . The consultant said all looked pink and lovely no signs of ulcerative colitis - so hopefully the vedolizibub is magical or has it gone? I even got boston bowel score 3* excellent and bowel prep good. He took 2 biopsies too so will know more in 3 weeks.

Thank you for asking - means a lot.

How are you

Sooty712 profile image
Sooty712

That is excellent news for you 🙂 Well done getting through it all and fantastic results 👍 How long did the sigmoidoscopy take ? It's so nice hear such a positive response from someone who had no sedation or gas and air it really gives me such less nerves about going to have it done 🙂 Thank you for updating and sharing how it all went and fingers crossed 🤞 for the results of the biopsy. You must be so relieved it is all done with.

I hope you are enjoying your well deserved curry or planning to tomorrow 😄

All the very best 🙂👍
