Anemia

I am currently going through a pretty bad flare up and have been put on an 8 week course of steroids, the doctor has told me I am also anaemic but I cant have anything for that until I have had bloods after my course has finished. Has anyone else experienced this? And what did you take to help? As I feel exhausted enough with a flare up let alone being anaemic on top.

I had a talk with the dietitian who worked with the Gastro Team. The best treatment I eventually had for exhaustion is B12 injections, and oral Vit D3 with eggs and red meat in my diet.

Ive got my appointment in October so i may have to request to talk to a dietitian then, and then maybe she can help me with my diet. Im vegan and gluten free, so i really have to be aware of what i am eating. I will look into B12 and vit D3! Thank you for your reply! X

Your fault for being vegan

I feel that comment is uncalled for, the blood loss the doctor believes is to do with the flare up, since being vegan my blood levels have been the best they have been just unfortunately not at the moment. I suggest you gain some more knowledge about veganism before making a comment like that, its for my health, which massively improved, but not only that the animals and the environment.

Please do not share such negative statements, they are not welcome here. We are a friendly supportive community, unlike some facebook forums I have followed we do not make comments to cause offense or upset, but offer support guidance and hope to one another. If you cannot give one of these please dont say anything at all

I am vegan and gluten free too and was fine for a good couple of years whereas before I was having flare ups once a month. For some reason it has come back recently but I definitely wouldn’t blame it on being vegan! I am trying more low fibre foods as well as all my usual meds and going to see a nutritionist next week.

Unfortunately for me the anemia gets worse with flare ups. Are you able to take any type of iron supplements? I’m not familiar with a vegan diet but what about beets? I hear they are very helpful.

Dark leafy greens are good, esp spinach. I would get gp to advice re iron tabs. Ones you buy over the counter like vit b tablets are more likely to be excreted in urine as b vits are water soluable x
