Hi. I have recently been diagnosed with sigmoid ulcerative colitis. I would love to know what are the foods which I should cut out. Any help would be much appreciated

Hi,

Welcome

Im afraid its a matter of trial and error. some people find gluten free diet helps, some its dairy free or certain veg/fruits etc. There is no definite 'do not eat' category. All I can advise is keep a food diary and if anything aggravates it, avoid eating it for a few weeks. it is then worth trying that food again just to check it was that food and not just a bit of aggravated colitis.

During a flare up following a low fibre/low residue diet can help as it rests the bowels - its very bland and boring but worth it whilst waiting for meds etc to take effect x

Thank you very much for reply. I'll try the diary and hopefully find out the good and the bad.

Hi Maisie I also have UC mines in the sigmoid Colon as well and to be honest what I eat has absolutely no bearing on my symptoms, I can eat more or less anything including curries etc when not in a flare and anything and everything irritates it when I am in one.

I believe that UC is completely individual to the sufferer, I will say that I try to steer clear of some of the suppositories unless its a major flare as in over 12 weeks, I use loads of turmeric in food and I'm sure it helps tremendously, I also make my own enema as well with tumeric, it stopped my last flare that had been ongoing and bloody for nearly 11 months.

Natural healing agents can also be better than some prescribed drugs.

Hi. Thank you got you reply. I'm just coming to the end of 3 months worth of steroids. I'm back to see my consultant and hopefully find out what my next step is. Don't know if I will be on medication or not. I just hope that it can be kept under control as it really got me down . It's good to hear what other people are doing to keep it at bay and how they are looking after themselves

Hi

I have left sided colitis too and am told I need plenty of soluable fibre in my diet especially in a flare because I get feacal loading/ constipation even though I can be going 15 plus times a day passing blood mucous feaces etc when I am well I can eat what I want but try to have a healthy diet.

Research soluable fibre on internet avoid skins on fruit veg ,cooked is easier to digest etc

Alĺ the best hope you better soon
