Ibd Diet: Can anyone advise me on foods... - Crohn's and Colit...
Ibd Diet
Of course it all depends on how bad your condition is, how good your current health is, and what do you typically eat? Even controversy over whether diet is or is not a factor. Personally, it's all personal. Lol! I stay shy of acidic type of foods such as tomato based. Fatty foods give me a problem as does chocolate, sigh. Now that I'm an old man (63) I've been less able to handle red meat. Poultry, fowl and fish are generally tolerable. As for meds I take OTC generic Dramamine for nausea, upset stomach. I'm also on Xanax so that helps to reduce stress. Past the stomach there are a number of prescription drugs that work with the "gut" to help it do it's job. I daily have a container (5 oz.?) of yogurt; do a bit of research on yogurts, there are a LOT of them out there. Many of the lower priced ones will do as well as the higher priced ones. Just make sure they have live probiotic bacteria. If you can handle the fruit flavored go for it. If not then...I dunno, that's the only way I eat it. I'm sure there are ways to flavor it if you don't care for it as is. You can enjoy spicy foods but in moderation. Don't try to win the hottest wing eating award. Some say stay away from diary but I have never had an issue with it (I was raised on a farm, always diary products at home) so I cannot say. Whether milk coats and soothes your stomach or the lactose isn't digested and causes an upset. Depends on you. And no alcohol. Or severely limit it. That and smoking. Bad for the body overall and the innards as well. Though as a hypocrite I do find some relief from medical marijuana; I tell myself that it's not as bad because I use less product. Whatever works for you; stay aware of what you body tells you. And know where every restroom is in a three-mile radius. This is just general advice and how I handle my colitis. I lost a brother due to Crohn's and am very much aware of how that condition takes it's victims as well. As you've noticed I have a tendency to rant. Sorry about that, but if I can ever provide you with assistance or knowledge I may have that would benefit you, do not hesitate to ask. Not just me but everyone here. Most have been there and done that and will share experiences. Take care, I'll stop now righ....
Thanks for your reply. I also have widespread arthritis . Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. I think the ibd is all tied in with that. My diet is fairly healthy I don't smoke or drink , but I still get serious bloating at times. I just wondered people 's thoughts on certain foods etc.
Well, the other day I made a pot of chili, was delicious. Spent many hours in bed after that moaning and groaning. I grew up in the age of Alka-Seltzer and still use it. Also anti-diarrhea pills, get them at Dollar Store with generic Dramamine. I've got arthritis in my pain (chronic lower back pain) up to about the middle of my spine. Calcified tendonitis in my shoulders and when it's wet rainy weather like this it HURTS. Oh yeah I forgot my tizanidine (muscle relaxer) that helps a bit. I'm retired and living alone with my ailments. Stay warm and dry.
As Rondo says, we are all different, but I would add fizzy drinks, sweetcorn, Brussel sprouts and baked beans to the list of avoidables, especially if you have a tendency to bloating or a windy body.
A windy body? Lmao! The oh so polite descriptions we use like our proper British cousins, to wit "a windy body". Roll me on the floor, I laugh. Just speaking personally, for myself only, do not encourage others to follow my example as I am a trained, fartologist. Yes, I fart. In public one must have skill in the SBD (Silent But Deadly) method so as not to draw attention to oneself. Elevators are especially tricky as vapors can be rapidly detected. Also the utmost care must be taken to muffle the sound accompaniment that is sure to follow form. Perhaps a pre-recorded song on the cell that is set to go at the press of a finger to initiate a song or other sound as a distraction; for emergency purposes only. At home, it's a party favor! Loved that batch of homedmade chili last week. This week is in full swing with digestive issues and the resultant "unburnt fuel" that escapes as a gas. I loves me some beans.
Keep a food diary and see what works and what probably really doesn't for you, also add symptoms. For me in a flare beige food white rice, potatoes, poached chicken.
Thank you for your reply. I think chocolate is a trigger for me 😣
I was diagnosed with UC six months ago after a massive flare lasting six weeks. I’ve been fine since then, I don’t take medication for it. I eat what I want while I’m well, which is mostly simple plant based. If I get another flare, I’ll go onto making clear chicken broth, white rice, potato without the skin and white sourdough toast, avoiding fibre and probably low fodmap.
I was diagnosed with Crohn's a couple of years ago. Personally I can't find any triggers. Dairy, Gluten and chocolate are not a problem for me.
Thankfully my symptoms are fairly mild, farting and burping aside. I don't like spicy foods anyway so even if that is a trigger I probably wouldn't know.
I don't smoke either and drink very occasionally.
As far as I'm concerned, it's just something I've got to live with. I've tried various meds, however, the side effects were worse than the symptoms.
I also have Chronic Fatigue syndrome and the drugs were leaving me feeling like a wet dish rag.
My consultant is grudgingly allowing me to go without treatment as a test and I've been OK so far.
Best of luck
Thanks for your reply. I find the same with my rheumatoid drugs , the side effects are horrendous.
One thing I did notice as rather odd is that during the final weeks of my brother's passing (he had at this point an ostomy bag directly attached to the stoma at the end of his stomach. Everything after that point had been removed.) He developed a strange desire for lemons. Fresh lemons. He would ask me to bring him lemons which he ate the insides. Oh and the salt he poured on before eating. It made me pucker up just watching him bite into a lemon as I would an apple. We figured his body was telling him it needed and/or wanted something and these products were filling that need. This was still early in the detection and research phase of Crohn's disease as a disease itself and not an out-growth from a pre-existing condition. And pickles. The more sour the better. Whatever he wanted, within reaon, I got for him. He was younger than me by two years but we were in our late 40's. My little brother, and I watched him waste away into a small shell of a man whose body and mind are riddled with toxins and drugs to try to keep him going. But when his heart stopped I said that's it. He has left us. He was finally free from over thirty years of stomach pain and the ills that go along with it. I was sad that I lost my best friend, my only brother, but glad to know that his suffering and his memory will live on. Today his daughter, my niece, is the last of our family bloodline. She lives around the block, we are very close. Very much alike as well, it's a good thing. She is the reason I haven't tossed in the towel of life. Here I am with aches and pains but relatively healthy, compared to how he was. What would it say to her that I just tossed away my life for no real good reason but he suffered every inch of the way until his heart stopped fighting? Nope, I'll ask her permission first.
