Was out for a gentle run this morning, slow going due to there still being snow and ice lying in many places. So only did approx. 4K in 28 minutes so not at all fast.
What I have found though is, one week ago my doctor changed my heart tablets and this morning my Garmin tells me that instead of an average 165bpm. on a run at this speed it was a whopping average 187bmp and even went up to 194 at one point. Yikes!! I think this is a bit on the high side, are there any Garmin runners out there who are finding perhaps that their heart rate increases when the weather is rather cold thats the only other thing I can think of? Problem is I don't always wear my HRM these days so my records aren't that consistant.

Hi there, my first suggestion would be perhaps a chat with your GP? I think anyone with a cardiac history would be wise to get the okay before continuing.
I don't know your age or history but a HR of 194 is very high!
and is around the maximum for someone in their 20's, and I would not expect to see that heart rate on a gentle run!
You can of course get electrical interference probs but that normally is really obvious giving erractic high readings.
I'm in my 50s, and really don't like my heartrate going much over 150 - it makes me feel horrible. But I'm still new to this game. I'd agree with walney - chat to your gp. Maybe check your resting heart rate - perhaps the new tablets make the resting rate higher too?
Thanks for replies guys. The tablets are to control an irregular heart rate and the old tablets worked wonders and kept it quite slow at rest rate. I think these may well take a while for my system to get used to. Have an appointment with GP anyway as he's very good at checking when ever any changes have been made. Will try and fit in a few more gentle runs before I go back and see him, that way I will know if its just been a one off. I'm feeling fine and do other exercise apart from running and although I'm 62 I consider myself pretty fit for my age.
SVT? if you don't mind me asking? I am at the oposite end of the scale I have a resting heart rate of about 38! Glad your feeling well and I'm sure as you say things will settle down.
Hi there, it might be worth asking your doctor why your medication was changed, especially as you were fine on what you were taking. Sometimes gp's change your medication for financial reasons which may be in the practices best interest but not yours. A bit of research I think is in order. This happened to me once and I refused to go onto the cheaper alternative because some people found it ineffective and having had problems did not want to upset something that was settled. Good luck x
No, tablets were changed for circulation problems in my hands which is quite common after being on those tablets for a few years. There always seems to be side effects to any sort of medication which causes problems after a few years. Thanks though for suggestion.
Try not to trust the garmin. Can you stop and take your own pulse as soon as you see it racing on the garmin. At that rate you should be feeling really uncomfortable and feeling a bit breathless too.
Walney worried about your resting heart rate too of only 38, is your GP aware?
Oh yes, had it all checked out, partly my history of cycling at a reasonable level and partly "one of those things". Always causes some alarm at medicals though!
