Hi
I don't do phones and have an archaeic Orange mobile that doesn't download apps! So ... I am hoping to treat myself to something that will track my speed and distance. Any recommendations?

Nike+ GPS watch. Top bit of kit. Only just been released. If you're lucky, you could get one from eBay for £99. RRP £150.
You could time your run with a good old fashioned wristwatch and use mapmy run on the internet to plan and measure your route
In the meantime, or if you are on a budget, you can use mapmyroute.com. It is one of many free websites that allows you to put in your route and find out all kinds of information about it, including, of course, how long it is. If you know how long you ran for, you then have your pace. (It also marks milestones, like each kilometer on the route, so if you check your watch at those times you can also figure out your pace for each part of your route.)
Obviously, this is something you do at home, before/after your run. But it can be helpful if you are separated from your Garmin or other fancy gear.
Recently got my first 'app' phone. Endomondo and Runkeeper seem to cater for all the common phones. What I did was look at what Vodafone site (Orange in your case) had on offer phone wise and then checked the app sites.
I ended up with a HTC Explorer which is an easy peasey phone. Endomondo was easy to download and (with some help from peeps on this site) got it running yesterday. Top tip - make sure GPS is on otherwise you will end up running on the motorway according to the map (not by the canal) and it won't record distance. Some debate about accuracy of these apps but good starting point for getting some idea of how fast (or in my case slow) you are.
