Painful Calf

I'm a little concerned about my right calf,

I had a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in it 5 yrs ago, and that calf can be painful whilst running. Anyone else have trouble with painful legs? especially the calf.

W5R1 completed this afternoon - Woop Woop :-)

I haven't had dvt but I had a painful calf last week. When I had finished my post run shower, I turned the shower head on my calf for half a minute (turned to COLD!) It was suggested to me when I had my gait analysis. Then when I had time I put an ice pack under my calf and rested it up. A good time would be when you are having lunch or in the evening. I havent had any probs since. Hope this helps!

I know nothing about DVT so I'd get that checked out just to be safe.

In the first week of the programme my calf muscles were so sore that I got up on a morning and was unable to stand up properly, my husband found it highly amusing watching me drag my backside along the bedroom floor :D Once I learnt how and for how long I needed to stretch after every run the pain went away and now I only get a bit achy if I've done a long run. Youtube is excellent for stretches if you need to see how they are done properly ;)

do you stretch after a run? I thought this was all nonsense until I started on the longer runs. I get calf ache, but only in one calf, sort of to the inside of my leg. anyways, I now make sure that I stretch out my legs at the end of every run by squating forward on one leg & stretching the back leg by trying to place the heel of the back foot on the floor. then leaning back on that leg to stretch out the front leg calf. hope this makes sense? also if you stand on a step facing forward on your tip toes & dip your heel down this stretches out the calf muscles. if I dont do these stretches then later on in the day my calf muscles feel as if they are being squeezed :)

as you have had DVT before I think I would mention this to your doctor, although you are probably aware if this feels similar to that pain.

good luck. shelley
