I use Mapmyrun on Android - you can set the voice to chip in (disturbs Laura or your music for couple seconds) with your choice of distance markers - I have it every Km - tells you whow many km and how many minutes so far. When you get home you can see the map and your time on the phone and also it all downloads onto a website so you can track your progress. You can choose to make your route public for others to see on the website. You can see others who run in your area and see what routes they do as well. The website tots up your calendar of runs and totals each week etc. I havent tried Endomondo but have heard it recommended.

1 issue I have had a couple of times which is down to the phone's GPS not the app, is sometimes it doesn't start for a while or the GPS drops out halfway but if you turn the phone off completely ( shut down) and on again, this seems to correct it all again for a few weeks.

Endomondo is what I use and I find it good. I get GPS headaches sometimes too but I blame my phone case.

thank you for the recommendations. I will certainly be looking into these as it took me about 5mins to plot my run on the internet.

I really like MapMyFitness which is basically the same as MapMyRun, but also let you track other activities, such as walking and cycling.

I've just realised that MapMyFitness is giving me inaccurate results so I'm switching to Endomondo.
