Morning Annieapple.

I don’t keep a journal. I have an Apple Watch and the health app on my phone. It’s quite comprehensive in its detail but nowhere near as good regarding personal and environmental details that one could enter in a journal.

I am with you on this one! I used to keep a diary and pop in the weather. It was fun comparing “this time last year, it snowed” etc but now sadly Apple runs my life. 😀

My early Christmas present was a second hand Apple Watch. I think at my age I was worried I’d give myself a heart attack embarking on C25k! It’s quite reassuring being able to check on all the health stats and it is like a journal in itself logging the routes, times and improvements in times etc. Basically I know that I’d be too lazy to write one myself!

🍏Lovely to hear from you! Sadly I am out of the habit now but would like to go back to it in the New Year, maybe 🤔 🤣

I love my Journal, and love to doodle into it when planning my workout plans. But it’s rather a more general fitness and health journal. But it allows me to see the more long-term patterns in my fitness journey.

🍏👏 This looks like fun 🤩 The colours are relaxing as is doodling… great to have fitness and progress or lack of mapped out.. When in your busy, busy schedule do you find time? Is it the same time every day? Habit? Xx

Yes, Run early in the morning before work, e.g. 7 or 8am..

Row at 5pm or 6pm after work. (5pm when working from home, 6pm when commuting)

Rope Flow is always a warmup before heading out for a walk or run, but is only 5min, so rather a fitness snack.

Walking, which in its intentional form (other than walking to and from somewhere)is a new habit, slotted in at lunchtime, never more than 30 minutes, often just 20, leaving me with enough time for a quick lunch before getting back to work.

Somehow over the years this pattern emerged and works really well for me. It does get disrupted when I have to travel though, or when there are critical tight deadlines. But I do tend to prioritise my fitness nowadays over my work, and I don’t tend schedule meetings anymore during these workout times… mostly. I think I’ve become also more assertive in stopping meetings at the time I suggested they would stop. It’s a learning curve, isn’t it.

I have kept a running diary since I started C25K, ALL my runs, including what we call maintenance 3K runs I have kept note off in those diaries, two highlights come to my mind for 2024, I got PB for my 54th 10K and 3 weeks later I ran my 55th 10K at The Great Scottish Run in Glasgow on October 6th

🍏🤩Your stats blow my mind AlMorr your achievements are fantastic & you are always so encouraging to all of us! I wish I had kept a diary from the beginning!

Actually Annieapple the diary started in 2015 when I started to grow a beard and when I started running in 2018 I then started to record all my runs as well

Yesterday I was the tallwalker at Springburn parkrun, plenty of photos of me and the other 133 running.

On Springburn parkrun Facebook page, there is a short video of the start of the run with a piper playing until me the tailwalker passes, the reason the piper was there was because yesterday 30th November was St Andrew's Day

Yes it was… how special to have a piper there! AlMorr I have just watched the video & saw you clapping the piper!! What fun to see you! Thanks for sharing!! 😀

I've been keeping a daily diary since 2018 (feel quite pleased with myself about this 😁). They now fill a shelf! When I started c25k I wrote my times, distance, pace etc at the back of the book(s). When I graduated I bought my Garmin watch so now a whole load more stats from there get written down on the days I run. I also note the stats from the NRC app as they're slightly different. My Garmin stats include the warm up and cool down whereas NRC is just the run.

As well as that I'll post a short account of the run on Bridge to 10k if something I find interesting occurs to me on the run, which it usually does 😂

So the answer is...no I don't keep a Running Journal but I DO keep a journal of my running 😂

🍏🤣 You are starting to run away with this! Yes many runners use Bridge to 10K as a run diary… it’s one of the best places to go, post graduation… certainly improves the learning curve… It’s seems to me it’s the busy people who find time to keep diaries. You are all super organised! ⭐️

When I graduated from C25K, in 2016, I started using a diary each year. Just a basic A5 week to view. There are six in a drawer and it is great to look back at them. I even printed out a picture of me at an event each year and stuck it on the front 😊. Not using one at the moment but I print out an ‘exercise plan’ so I can tick off what I have achieved each week. 😀👍

I'm great at starting things, I wrote a journal for about 3 runs, not even sure where it is now but if I find it I'll probably write a few more runs ..... I'm supposed to keep a food diary too, I did for a few weeks then decided it was boring 🤣🤣🤣 and forgot to keep it up

Annieapple profile image

🍏🤣 Oh Sue I am much the same.. when I see all the lovely diaries here it inspires me to start again but ….. 🙈

No actual diary as such, but I do have lots of activities logged in Strava, Garmin Connect and FitoTrack.

Annieapple profile image

🍏 Yes our gadgets certainly keep track of us! One thing in favour of a written diary above the gadgets is it doesn’t “nag “you 🤣 My watch is forever telling me what to do!

I find Strava records and saves all I want to know (I love the annual summary that they send out in December).TBH, I used to give my runs titles and add a little script but now, most of the time I dont even do that now. Am I a humbug for taking this approach (no shade on the journal writers!)?

Annieapple profile image
AnnieappleAdministratorGraduate

🍏🤣 No, not at all!! It’s great that we all think differently, that no one way is absolutely right. It’s all about what helps us individually to enjoy and keep going on our running journey. This question has certainly sparked differing ideas. Thanks for contributing… great to hear from you xPugwash

I did used to keep a sort of written speadsheet when I used to run regularly about 15 years ago - comparing dates/times/pace/distance. That really motivated me when I could see an improvement. But now as everyone says they use their watches/apps to keep track. I *did* used to like my logbook though (in the back of my work notes as it was an easy place to look at my record) Maybe I'll start that up again...? I feel inspired by seeing people's journals on here!

🍏 A spreadsheet.. now that’s interesting !

It’s amazing how “catchy” other people’s enthusiasm is & how many different ways there are. I know our Oldfloss adds sketches/paintings to her records. Maybe she will have time to share something with us too. Thanks for taking time out to comment! Xx
