And I’m doing it Al-fresco. It’s been all treadmill so far. I’m not averse to running outside. I just don’t want to get my new trainers dirty.
On the subject of running shoes. I have 2 pairs. Road and trail. How many do you have and are they specific to certain conditions. Are there all rounder shoes available.

Did C25K and more in old road trainers. Now, over four years later, I have four pairs of shoes, all Brooks, all bought in sales or on Vinted. Hyperion Max for shorter and faster road running, Ghost Max for easy-paced road running. Caldera 6 for easier trails, tracks and road-to-trail. Cascadia 16 for more technical, steeper trails and places where the path runs out or never existed, usually in the forest.
Most of my running is on paths beside fields. In summer they're hard packed earth, in winter they're mud. I just use normal road running shoes on the advice of the running shop I got my first pair from.
Whether you need specialist trail shoes will depend on the surfaces where you run.
Good question! I mainly run on paths/soil and when I had my gait analysis for my new trainers I was advised against trail ones due to the lack of support, as I need supportive trainers, but I do wonder if this was what they had in stock.
Thai is my second time doing C25, and first time I had normal road supportive shoes. I haven’t had any problem last time and this time around. I have run on icy/muddy super muddy conditions and so far so good.
And yes, I’m with you re dirty trainers. It does make me sad, however the advice is not wash them as much as we think we need to! Let them air dry and just clean the soles under running water or shake the dry mud.
The running world is divided on those who don’t and those who do I think!🤣 I’m afraid I always clean my trail shoes after muddy runs - which is usually every weekend in the winter and they have always served me well. ✨👟✨ I use a Boot Buddy and then stuff with paper.🙂
Embrace the elements and get those shoes a little dirty!! It’s hard to avoid at this time of year and certainly during the months to come!
Like you, I have a pair of trail shoes and a pair of road shoes and swap between them depending on my run. If I’m running on a mix of terrain then I run in my Hoka Speedgoats (trail) as they seem comfy on all surfaces. They are also fantastic in the mud and I love a muddy trail!🤣 I wear Hoka Clifton’s if I’m just on the roads.
Some trail shoes are described as ‘hybrid’ I think and will happily take you from road to trail.
I use a Boot Buddy to clean them and stuff with newspaper to help dry.👍🙂
I have two pairs for running (well 3 if you count the ones in the box waiting for the current road ones to start to decline….😉) one of them is a trail pair, asics trabuco which sadly haven’t been out as much as I’d like them to as I’m currently living in a more built up area……I miss my off road runs….
The road shoes are asics gel nimbus……love ‘em and as for when they are new and shiny oooohhhh! However, I then love going out and getting them dirty….😁….evidence they’ve been used…😁🏃♀️
I know gyms aren’t keen on people with really mucky trainers so actually I bought myself a basic Nike pair for the gym, classes etc., (these are not suitable for running, I’m very, very rarely, unless I really have to, a treadmill runner)
Anyway, as for cleaning/washing, I’d say follow the manufacturer’s instructions, the vast majority say never, ever put them in a washing machine - 😱 really bad not just for the shoes but the washing machine too….
For wet muddy ones, let them dry, then bash together to get dried mud off, then if you really, really have to, just rinse/clean the outside only. (You do have to wonder why….you’re only going to take them out and get them dirty again…🤷♀️)
I’m with Oldfloss here, badges of honour and running medals they are, plus if you look after them properly - as per manufacturer instructions- they will serve you well 👍
I am NOT an expert. I have two pairs of running shoes and I use one for the gym (to workout - I don't like running machines) and one to actually run; though I have used both outside and did so from the start.
When I went to a specialist to help my son get his running shoes, I questioned the guy about mine. He said if I had specific gait needs or always ran on a specific surface I would need specific shoes, ditto if I was a long distance runner. However, as someone who ran 5-10k, 2-3 times a week ... he pointed to the wall of shoes: "any one of these that fits and is comfortable would be absolutely perfect for you."
Hi Baggieboy61 well I have two pairs one pair are trail and the other are road. However as I live in the sticks with lots of fields, farm tracks ,light trails etc I just use my trails for outdoors and my road ones for my treadmill as they are much much cleaner. I like to keep one pair clean. Anyway that’s it and now I think it maybe time to invest in a new pair of trail shoes being as it’s Xmas nearly and all🤔🎅🤣🤣🤣🙋♀️
